Topical Magnesium Lotion for Feet
Yesterday I had an Integrative Medicine doctor encourage me to try rubbing a topical Magnesium ointment on feet, saying she’s heard it’s an anecdotal remedy for neuropathy feet, especially if they feel like you’re walking on gel pads or bubble wrap and may feel wobbly for balance (not pain). I’m never opposed to trying anything at reasonable costs if it seems to have merit, but while I’m googling where to find it, I thought I’d throw it out to this group and see if anyone has tried it and what results they think they got from it? Thank you 🙂

My symptoms started at the beginning of 2022: burning, tingling, throbbing feet at night, as well as random electrical surges through my arms and legs and occasional numbness and loss of strength in my hands. I saw a neurologist about a year ago and he diagnosed me with Small Fiber Neuropathy triggered by 25 years of prediabetes. He did some blood work, but no other diagnostic tests. He told me that the neuropathy was not curable but that, as long as I exercised and kept my weight and A1c under control, the neuropathy would progress slowly (I was 68). In the meantime, my family doctor prescribed Ozempic for my prediabtes and obesity. Over the past year, I have lost 50 lbs and my A1c has dropped from 6.2 to 5.3. I also have a daily exercise routine that I find enjoyable. I take many of the usual supplements, including magnesium, B12, D3, Benfotiamine, Lion's Mane... I wear compression knee socks for all of my waking hours, and apply topical creams as needed, such as the magnesium lotion, Voltaren and menthol. I resisted the stronger medications as long as I could....but at the beginning of this summer, the burning feet and pain got worse and occurred during the the days as well as nights. My doctor prescribed a low dose of Gabapentin and eventually increased the dosage to 600 mg per day. This seems to be working well for me.
@dbeshears1 - Debbie - since you originally posted this in June of 2022, have you used the topical magnesium, and did it help for numbness? We have similar symptoms but likely not from same cause, just curious if this did help at all relating to numbness. Ed
Ed - a definite NO on tackling the numbness. For me it helped soothed the little underlying pain I might have from my PN / the little residual discomfort that maybe Gabapentin didn’t get. It’s a hood moisturizer as well, but I have yet to find anything that helps with numbness!
OK, thanks...back to the drawing board! Ed
And I’ll look for a better spell & grammar check tool, though I’m sure this group can certainly forgive neuropathy hands 🙂
John, thank you as usual for your prompt reply. I’ve read the magnesium information and will present it to my doctor. 🤞… maybe it will help.! Bcool123
John, another question… What brand of Chi laded magnesium do you use?
