First Lanreotide Injection: Any tips about diet and side effects?

Posted by nana120 @nana120, Jul 18, 2023

Good morning, I am an 81 yr old female & was diagnosed with stage 4 NETS in my liver metastasized from my lung in Dec 2022. Like so many of us it was discovered by accident during a GI test. I received my first lanreotide injection July 6, 2023 with minimal instruction, only that I might have intestinal upset (I did) and that I would not be able to eat spicy food for the foreseeable future. I am to a have one injection every 28 days for the next 10 months. I stumbled on this site while trying to find some information about diet information and would appreciate any direction or experience the group can share.

Just to update my ongoing process: I am continuing to lose weight, so I tried to drink a Fairlife High Protein Milkshake in chocolate this week to add some fat and calories. The taste was quite good and I decided I could continue them until I spent the night with very crampy abdominal pains and woke to flushing on my face. I had read about some food items causing flushing, but I’m not sure what in the shake caused it. Was it the milk or the chocolate or perhaps some other ingredient? I receive my 3rd lanreotide injection on Aug 29 and a CT with contrast on Sept 8 to see if results are being accomplished. I am truly so appreciative to this group for everything I have learned from you

I did not tolerate well the milk shakes, probably due to milk, but also cacao is not ' a good friend" to NETs. I use protein powder, mixed with kefir and frozen berries.
I also became anaemic, so I eat eggs, avocado, liver, sardines. Because my NET is pancreatic with liver metastases and I have no gallbladder, I did not tolerate shrimp and most of the seafood. Swiss cheese, mozarella, goat cheese. Finally after 6 months post surgery I gained 2 lbs which stayed.
Slow and steady! I am up for my 6th Lanreotide and have a CT scan scheduled for September. Hope it will show good results.
We got this!💜🦓

I’ve been receiving injections every 4 weeks since 12/22. I find the few days after the injection I have the” wobbles “so I would suggest being careful when moving about if you have these symptoms. I removed all scatter rugs to be safe from falls . I eat lightly, low fat during these few days and make sure my water intake is good. Occasionally I deal with loose bowels and GI upset but again only for the first few days . I have several back issues and the pain in my back has increased since beginning the injections. The good news is my liver Mets ( numerous tumors )have decreased a bit in size, the pancreas tumor has no change . Hang in there, be positive and know the injections will help you! A positive attitude makes a huge difference!

I tried the protein shakes when I was recovering from my resection surgery. They contain a lot of fiber, and for me they caused bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. That could be part of what you are experiencing.
I also did not not do well with Lanreotide, causing similar symptoms. I currently take Octreotide injections every 28 days.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing symptoms. My back pain has been really bad and now I know it is a symptom. I find I cannot accomplish most household tasks without resting in between. Hopefully, my scan will have good results as well! I really appreciate the share!

Hopefully, a moderator will jump on this discussion to offer you some links to follow, but I my initial weight loss was due just to the NETs long before I began the lanreotide. Perhaps you are eating less or maybe having loose stools with this injection and not retaining the nutrients. At first I, too, was not unhappy with the weight loss, but it soon became way too much too quickly and not I do not seem able to reverse it.

Hello @nana120

As I've never had the monthly injections, I can't offer you any suggestions. It looks like many of the Connect members have shared from their experiences, though.

Have you talked with your oncologist's office to see what thoughts they might have on the weight loss and some of these other symptoms you are experiencing with the injections? If not, that might be a good place to start.

I am sure that you are looking forward to the results from your scan on September 8. Keep posting with your concerns and questions. This group is so helpful in supporting each other through this process!
