Extreme Bloating after Total Colectomy
I have had a total colectomy in late 2020.
I had a stoma for 8 weeks after my total colectomy due to complications - it had been successful reversed since. Recovery has been good - meaning I am less reliant on Loperomide in order to delay my need for the bathroom. In the 1st two years, frequency was up to 24times a day with high doses of loperomide (30 tablets a day).
Since Feb 2023, I have developed an onset of severe bloating that expands my waist by 4” and the swelling is painful. I have tried all cleanses and watched what I consume - I cannot pin point the cause. One moment I am fine and the next - it triggers in the middle of no where. All anti gas pills etc do not help. This has been difficult and very uncomfortable with little reprieve since it’s onset. My surgeon is unable to determine cause. It was explained that it could be previous scar tissues - I am seeking advice as it is making it impossible for me to function and the basketball belly I have makes it difficult to fit into my clothes. Weight fluctuations can be 2-5 pounds overnight.
Please advice as this severe bloating is weighing me down mentally.

I can relate and feel your pain. My distention and bloating also started after I had a Colectomy. I’ve had every test under the sun with no apparent reason.
Mine isn’t painful and has been about a 2 in expansion. I’m convinced it’s scar tissue from surgical lesions. No cure for that one except to do a low Fodmap diet to control it and make sure you are negative for SIBO.
I have also been very depressed by this. I’ve done pelvic therapy, antibiotics and low Fodmap.
I will post anything I find helpful if and when I do.
Good luck!
