What does everyone take for calcium or other supplements?

I take Citrical plus D slow release 1,200
Going by instructions on the bottle . Eat with it too. Well in the mornings when I wake up. I feel nauseated , and head ache , I thought this was suppose to be easy on your stomach. I about give up . Seems my body rejects everything .

Sue,
Do you mind to share what brand you use? It’s overwhelming when I start looking.
I’m also confused about the Calcium & Vitamin D. My endocrinologist also recommended Citracal. By the way, I currently am on my 2nd year of Forteo. Praying for positive results. I have very bad osteoporosis as well as an “S” curve that’s getting worse.
Thank you,
Diane

Oh, sorry, I'm not tied to a single brand - I buy any one that is USP or NSF certified, US Manufactured, and has all 5 types of collagen...and to make it more complicated, I use powder at home and capsules when I travel.

Regarding vitamin D, I have a question related to Tymlos. Has anyone had a drop in their vitamin D hydroxy 25 level? My vitamin D level was 56 at the start of Tymlos on 6/19 and yesterday it dropped to 20!

Wondering what you mean by "citrate is the worst". It is much better absorbed than carbonate and gentler on the stomach as well. Calcium Hydroxyapatite seems to have a positive effect on bone (it is cow bone afterall) but with caveats. Studies indicate that it increases phosphate levels in the blood so if you are prone to kidney stones, it's something you might want to look into. I take some hydroxyapatite but minimize its usage and balance my intake with calcium citrate, supportive nutrient supplementation and highly nutritive foods (which is always your best bet).

Hello,
I was once told by an endocrinologist that any form is the same and that I could choose one myself. But I was told by my PCP that the best form was the Hydroxyappetite. This Doctor was a DO. I trusted him as my experience with DO had always been very good.
At this time I am relying on getting calcium from fermented dairy and some foods that also offer calcium as it is my personal belief that the body is smarter than any doctor and will respond to foods more so than an isolated chemical as in pills. Like an orange as opposed to vitamin C in pill form there are other elements attached to that vitamin in the food that help our bodies to metabolize those nutrients. Mother knows best. ;o)

The second piece to this puzzle is activity. Exercise in most forms ( and especially movement to stress the bone) is what helps the most.

I agree that it's best to get your calcium and other nutrients from food but there definitely are differences between calcium supplements, not only their source but their absorption rates.

I refuse to obsess over which supplement is best. The proof is in the pudding. If my leveks of Ca and Vitamin D are where they shoukd be, I will stick with my inexpensive brand. I do not have the money to spend if there would be no benefit.

What about magnesium supplement?

Refreshing positive attitude!! Good for you - keep it going. Positive energy is contagious so hopefully those around you catch it.

I think maybe they have....I see more smiles and a positive reaction to me and my dog when we walk...... and even also when I am doing my intentional power walk without my pup along. Of course, when the sun shines in Oregon most people tend to smile more anyway..including me!

Best bets for all of our nutrients come from foods. Our body knows exactly what to do with them.
So for Magnesium: dark chocolate ( smile), tofu, edamame, avocados, whole grains, cultured yogurt, black beans, leafy greens (kale, spinach, mustard, collards, turnip greens ), pumpkin seeds, chia seeds.
I buy the edamame in freezer section and then fill a pan with a little water and bring to a boil then turn down and let simmer for about 7 minutes. Then cool, sprinkle with a little good quality vinegar and a pinch of salt. They pop easily from the pods and are a delicious snack while I watch sometimes depressing news. It cheers me up just a little.

Yes - mine also decreased - my doctor increased d3 supplement to 5000 - hopefully will increase that with next blood test in October ( every three months )
