Insert in femur never attached properly to bone after hip replacement
In August of 2021 I had complete right hip replacement surgery, I am male and was 60 years olds in very good health. From the time of the initial surgery I have had pain in my groin and down my leg, I also have strength and balance issues. After two years the doctor has determined the insert in the femur did not attach to the bone properly. Over the past two years they blamed the pain on multiple issues, left hip, pelvis, bursa etc. Finally X-rays showed a gap between the bone and insert. There is no infection or bone breakage. Has anyone else experienced this.

Husband has or supposed to have bursitis. Nothing surprises me with surgeons or doctors anymore.
Get to a qualified physician, maybe in a larger city. It’s a shame! So many need to bow out of this industry, not profession.
Hi there.
I haven’t heard of this, but it did get me thinking how on earth it has taken them so long to find this out.
I had a total right hip replacement in June 2022 and have not been right since.
I too have pain in my groin and still limp badly and been told like yourself it’s caused by left side, bursitis etc. I am due to have my left hip done soon but worry the same thing will happen.
So just wondering what will happen now about your hip? Can this be fixed at all?
Wishing you well with it and hopefully things will improve for you.
I have an appointment with another surgeon who specializes in revision surgery. I have found a lot of information and it will not be pleasant.
The doctor that did the first surgery has finally admitted something is wrong, there is a gap between the insert and the bone. This should have been fully packed with cement. When I asked what caused this his response was well sometimes these things happen. From what I have found on several medical sites is that it was not done properly, now I need a complete hip revision to take out the insert and replace it. Several hour surgery with potential complications. Plus, I will be out of work for 4 to 6 months. I have an appointment with a top revision surgeon in another city in October. I am also looking for an attorney, this failed surgery will cost me tens of thousands in medical and loss of wages, plus 2 years of severe pain and inability to do the outdoor recreation that I enjoy.
I am sorry to hear what you are going through. Revision is no fun, so make sure the doc doing it is experienced at it.
Afterward, be sure to insist on thorough rehab PT, as you have been compensating for the weakness and pain for 2 years, and will need to get your strength back and get gait training (relearn to walk properly).
Is it possible they erred and failed to usecement ar all, thinking they were putting in a cementless stem?
Be sure to get all of your surgical and post surgical records from the doctor and surgery center asap, including the exact model of each prosthetic piece used. (I had a different but equally unhappy experience with my original implants.)

I had a hip replacement seventeen years ago at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in NYC and have never had a problem with it. I may need revision surgery due to age of the material and the state of the art back then was such that a life span of the replacement was fifteen years. I expect to go to HSS for revision if that becomes necessary. From what I have researched, their revision process is a success.
I had my left hip replacement done on June 29,2021. I was getting along well with it, no pain, falls, etc for several weeks, then things just "didn't feel right" so I went back to the surgeon.
He took xrays, and determined that I had "subsistence" in my hip, and that it should be fine now. A few days later I was in TERRIBLE PAIN and went back to the surgeon. MORE SUBSTITENCE!!! This time about 3/4" slippage.
Had hip replacement surgery on Aug. 17, 2021.
Constant pain while standing, walking, or any other time when I put weight on my left leg.
I've had Xrays, MRI, Physical Therpy, Pain Management, Myofacial Release, meds, etc. but no relief!
I recently contacted my surgeon, and asked him if there was any way that I could have Xrays taken while weight-bearing on my left leg. So yesterday I had a "Bone Scan" to see if that would determine my pain.
Going back to surgeon on Aug 22 to find out what the Bone Scan results are.
I'VE HAD ENOUGH!!!! Life sucks and it's getting harder and harder to want to do things!
Any of you had similar experiences? Any ideas????
Thank you!!!
so what's your next action? A revision? Sure hope it goes well for you!!!
My heart is breaking for you. I had back to back femur breaks on left leg in 2017. I was left with a dropped foot and a trapped nerve across peroneal nerve. The nerve cannot be released from metal from surgery because if it gets nicked or crimped, paralysis could happen. I will never walk unassisted again, but I am BLESSED and still on the green side of the grass. Lots and lots of pain. Adding you to my prayers.🤗🙏❤️💜
Two terms you need to look up, Inadequate Implant fixation and Aseptic Loosening. I have an appointment with a new surgeon that specializes in revisions in October. I also have an appointment in a couple weeks with an attorney, I am over two years into this, the pain keeps me from doing some jobs, I have a plumbing company, and most of my hobbies have been cut way back or eliminated. Forget elk hunting or flyfishing the river. I need to have my left hip replaced, but until the right one is repaired I cannot risk it. The pain in my right hip which was replaced is much worse than the pain in the left and far worse than what it was prior to surgery.
