Small intestine bacterial overgrowth

Posted by momochan @momochan, Apr 6, 2016

Hi, I have been suffering from small intestine bacterial overgrowth since last Jan. Have gone through a few courses of antibiotics, but whenever it finished, it came back and the stool got loose. I really am desperate, could anyone have suggestion? .

Hi @lauralee,

I sincerely apologize for the tardy reply, but somehow this post slipped past me, and while replying to your question about scoliosis, I came upon your message in this group!

I'm tagging @ladysky @stephieisabella @dandl48 @doron @saucy @sibobegone @jlfisher56 @ptfitzy @contentandwell and Mentor @kdubois, as I'm sure they will return with some more insight for you.

@lauralee, did you meet with the heart specialist? How did the stress test go? We look forward to getting to know you.

@kanaazpereira @lauralee Sorry, but this is not an area I would have input in. The only problems I have there are due to medications so I am now on two imodium a day and that does help. Before taking that I had to severely limit fiber, fruits, raw vegetables, etc. I generally have a salad for lunch and some meat of fish with a salad for dinner so eliminating those was quite difficult and overall not the best of things. White bread? I hadn't eaten that for years except for an occasional white roll when out to dinner. Potatoes? Another thing I eat very infrequently. The imodium allows me to eat these things again.

Hello @fritz65 and @mdonaghy,

Welcome to Connect. You may notice that I moved your discussion and combined it with this existing discussion on SIBO. I did this asI thought it would be beneficial for you to be introduced to the many members who have discussed much of what you are experiencing.

@fritz65, since diet plays a significant role, I’d also encourage you to view this conversation, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/leaky-gut-constipation-and-gluten-free/ where I’m tagging @alina151 @jacquelinek1956 @clemlaa, who have shared their experiences as well, with SIBO.

Here's a clinical update by one of the Mayo Clinic gastroenterologists:
“Small intestine bacterial overgrowth is common in Crohn’s disease patients who have undergone ileocecal resection or have strictures, fistulas or reduced intestinal motility. Mayo Medical Laboratories recently developed an assay for bile acid in the feces. Until now, a diagnosis of bile acid diarrhea has been provisional and treatment has been empiric.” http://www.mayoclinic.org/medical-professionals/clinical-updates/digestive-diseases/management-of-refractory-ibd-starts-with-excluding-patients-who-dont-have-it

@mdonaghy, since you noted, "I think I have leaky gut," I thought I'd mention that the Gastroenterology & GI Surgery Page on Connect has some great videos about leaky gut, by Mayo Clinic experts: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/page/gastroenterology-and-gi-surgery/

@fritz65, when were you diagnosed with SIBO? What symptoms are you experiencing? @mdonaghy, I realize how discouraging this condition can be, but I'm so glad you reached out to the Connect community. May I ask how you are managing, at present?

Look at my reply about the FODMAP diet (Australian). Smoothies definitely out! You have to follow it carefully under the supervision of a specialist dietitian and it’s not easy for everyone. You need to give it at least 4 months. Treatment is free in Britain but I don’t know about the US.

I am just beginning FODMAP today. I have a great dietician who has given me a personalized diet to follow. It is a bit difficult in the vegetable category bc we are pescovegetarians. That has always made travel difficult, but we manage in kitchen flats.
In Canada we have a new herbal product called IBGuard. It helps with the trapped gas that inhibits proper digestion of food. But it is pricey. E

You get used to the vegetables you can eat. I miss onions, garlic, mushrooms and that kind of thing. Gluten free bread is readlly available, as is lactose free milk. Fermented cheeses are fine in moderation. You really have to boost your protein intake without using pulses. Difficult for vegetarians. Good luck with it. It really works for me.
