Hello,
I have had 4 joint replacements in 2 1/2 years (2 hips and 2 knees). I'm 54 years old with osteoarthritis. I'm 16 weeks out on my right knee and 9 weeks out on the left knee. I used ice packs that were flexible to go around your knee I had four different kinds of ice packs and they were still cheaper than the ice machine that doesn't seem to get very cold. I had rented an ice machine on my first hip replacement replacement, I wasn't a fan of it.

My Dr. also did not recommend them however I insisted and of course he did order one for me. However he also didn't recommend PT because he said that I could do what I needed at home. I also insisted and he wrote an order for PT. There was nothing more valuable than going for PT to the outpatient facility and they used the exact machine I got for 15 minutes every time I had PT before I left as well as stimulation with it. I highly recommend both. I had my ice machine only for about 4-5 weeks as it was rented but I was thankful for having it for that time. It also used a pump to squeeze my leg to prevent blood clots as well.

Good point that the machines do not get as cold as good ol' ice packs. I used the machine after pt sessions but would not pay 3 or 4 grand for one of these.
