Post Covid/Long Covid: Anyone else experienced bladder issues?

Posted by lilybell @lilybell, Nov 11, 2022

Had Covid on Oct 1st. Most symptoms were gone after about 10 days but I still have a headache and heart palpitations.

Around Oct 21 I started getting bladder issues. I need to pee frequently, day and night, but very small ammounts, and I have bladder pain especially as it fills up (well, as it ”thinks” it fills up).

No bacteria found.

I did some research and found this can actually happen after Covid and is called ”Covid Bladder” or ”Covid Cystitis”. But this is not very known (yet) in my small country so I don’t get taken seriously.

Anyone else experienced bladder issues? I heard it can be treated with Loratidine and Famotidine but I have no idea what dosage?

Yes, during Covid I had bladder issues. I’d be walking to the bathroom nearby and it would be like somebody opened the valve and it wasn’t me. Since having Covid the end of June 2023, I’ve had to be treated for overactive bladder with medication. That is helping.

Same! I had Covid for the first time late Nov/early Dec 2022 and have been experiencing bladder issues ever since (off and on). It started very intense with the urgency to pee WHILE I was home for two weeks with Covid and is still ongoing now. Doctors have talked about "Interstitial Cystitis" but never mentioned "Covid Cystitis" but I've also read several medical articles on it in addition to all the comments here. I've never had bladder issues before and am 57. I thought these were UTI's but tests came back neg from GYN. Now I have to have a cystoscopy since I continue to have trace blood in urine. Ugh! COvid also seems to have raised my BP and my heart was racing so fast one day that I ended up in ER. It seems to have been related to dehydration.

For those with bladder pain, see your gynecologist. Long covid may be inflaming the lining of the bladder and can cause severe pain. There is treatment, such as an estrogen cream. And others.

This thread is so illuminating! I did see my gynecologist thinking I had a BV or UTI but it wasn't that. I'm already on estrogen cream at 57 and gyn also said that it should help with "urology-related" pain. I haven't noticed it helping at all but I'll be following up with urologist for a cystoscopy in a week. I have trace blood in my urine since getting Covid 3 months ago, though I know that's common with IC, too. I was taking turmeric daily for years but recently ran out and will try that again. Also may try probiotics or Activia as others have suggested. Lots to learn but so glad I'm not the only one with post-Covid bladder symptoms!!

YES. 1 month out and experiencing exactly that- did not realize it's so common!!

Me, too! I'm 3 months out and my UTI-type symptoms started likely just as I had gotten Covid, though my Covid symptoms started 4 days after the urgency began. Could not explain off an on urgency, bladder and urethra discomfort and other similar mysteries until reading this thread. Crazy that not a single doctor from primary care to gynecologist to urologist has mentioned Covid IC to me. They just say "we're learning more every day."

yes..i have a difficult urinary problem, the pressure of needing to go is there, but it's often difficult to urinate and feels like my bladder never finishes emptying out. I am a woman, but my bladder acts as if I have an enlarged prostate, without the prostate.
I have been wondering about this and never thought about it possibly being associated with my previous covid infection.
I have also noticed that my stomach has been bloated since then.

Yes, same symptoms 2yrs. ( original Covid Feb2020). Wakes me at night as well, so I get up to urinate but can't go

Post covid, I have almost no urinary output at all. No matter how much liquid I drink. It's this a bladder or kidney failure? Will I have a heart attack because of liquid retention?

I have bladder issues as well but frequency and urgency are my problems. It seems to cycle I’m okay sometimes and then can’t make it to the bathroom on time!

Are your hands or feet swelling? Are you short of air?
