Best excercise to combat ADT therapy side effects?
it looks like walking is the winner with emphasis on some type of weight training. it also seems to align with just about anything that gets us out of the chair, couch or bed.
i am on day 1 of my journey. i want to fight pc the entire way.

That's the spirit! I might consider also counting calories and perhaps eating a little less. Say 15-20% less. I noticed I was gaining inches, not necessarily much weight but girth...
I think the hormonal changes were causing a change in the way my body was processing food and less of it was becoming energy or muscle. 10 mos to go...
I use an app to keep track of calories (and it also keeps track of protein, calcium, sodium, etc..) For my weight and activity level @2000 cal a day was suggested, I keep it down around 1600 now. Don't feel any different to speak of and the "Lupron belly" came off. To get enough protein I take a high protein (30gms) low calorie (150) supplement when I need to boost the protein without eating too much. I use My Fitness Pal but there are many others.

I like this topic and replying to bump it to the top again. While this isn't prostate cancer specific, I find making the commitment to physical activity is essential. I make it a non-negotiable by putting on my workout clothes first thing. I'm dressed, so heck, I might as well at least show up to work out. Okay I'm here (gym, walking route, backyard, wherever you workout), I might as workout. I'm always glad I did.
How is your activity with walking and weight training going, @rgillis? What motivates you? Is it helping with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) side effects?
I was on ADT for 2 years in 2019-2021. I am on it again for 18 months after spot radiation treatment at Mayo. I am 57 and have never had any material fatigue on ADT. I credit this to exercise (about 5 hours a week of cardio, weights and a yoga day) and perhaps diet (I eat some meat, but mostly lots of fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, grains, etc.).
I have gained 5-8 pounds on this round of ADT, but my stomach feels like I gained 20 lbs. My doctor says the ADT weight gain goes straight to the stomach, so that helps to explain it.
Not sure there is a"best" exercise to combat ADT SEs. I like to ride my bike, play basketball, swim, ski, hike in the mountains. So, starting point is whatever 'exercise" you do, should be a combination of cardiovascular and resistance training. As to the what, well, what do you like to do, take long walks, hike, ride, swim...as to the amount, well it should be ingrained in your life where most days you do something, mix it up. Some days I ride my bike 30 miles or so, other days I use the elliptical, lift weights and swim. When we go on vacations, I try and make them active ones with hikes in the mountains.
That alone won't combat the probable weight gain so you''ll need to moderate your diet, notice I said moderate, not fast! Despite exercising 5-7 days a week and keeping an eye out on what I eat, I've gained 6-7 pounds, in the mid section, sigh.

I am a 73 yr old who has been on Lupron for 2 years and gained 10 pounds with daily exercise.
My nutrition is in the moderate.
I have just had my last injection and am hopeful that I will take this weight off!

Just about to turn 62, on Orgovyx for 14 mos out of a 2 year prescription now.
I'm in the same camps as above. I weight lift, run, I'll do yoga once in a while, hike, bike ride etc.. all mostly determined by where I am on the given day. I travel a great deal for work.
I've had to cut back the calories to about 75% of what is considered normal and reduce to very little carbs to maintain my weight. Initially, I pretty much stayed the same weight but muscle turned to belly fat all while working out. The reduction in calories helped remove some of the junk weight but I feel as though muscle gain is really tough. I eat very well during the week, mostly stir fried (in avacado oil) veggies and chicken/fish and even bring food on the road to reduce the temptation to eat junk. I'll also take a protein supplement with 30 grams of quality protein while only having 150 calories once a day.
It's a journey for sure! On the weekends, I don't go crazy but give myself a little break and go to a nice restaurant and maybe even have a slice of bread or two. All things in moderation....

I'm taking a break from the 2-1/4 years of Lupron Shots, my joints were hurting. I have gained a tremendous amount of empathy for "larger" women as it is super difficult to lose weight for me without the aid of Testesterone flowing through my body!!!! I was about 230 and got up to 263 over this time. My last shot was in early May 2023; today being the 20th of August, I don't know if it is nice weather, a placebo effect, or lessening of the Lupron, but I've gotten a "burst" (small but significant to me) of energy recently and havn't fallen asleep on the couch in the afternoons! And accomplished some elementary tasks around the yard, shed and garage that I have badly neglected for too long. I weighed out at a dehydrated 247.6 this evening after 6-1/2 hrs. in the Sun doing these little tasks. Dehydration isn't healthy, but I wrestled in H.S. and College when it was a stupid wrestler's, like me, "easy" way to make weight. Best of Luck to all of you in controlling your appeitte and caloric intake/metabolic rate / emotional eating / comfort eating! It can be depressing and shocking to witness your body- the body you trained since 5th Grade, over-trained in High School and College and didn't keep it in "Match- Fitness" but kept in very good to excellent health-related fitness become a blob in less than 2 years! But this was the choice I made ,with consultations, with my wife (and best friend) when I chose longevity over vigor. God Bless You All. Especially Women who struggle tremendously to lose ounces! My hat is off to You! You're CHAMPIONS!
Just do the Carnivore diet I lost 60lbs in 4 months.

High in fat, cholesterol, and sodium
May lack certain micronutrients and beneficial plant compounds
Does not provide fiber
May not be suited for some populations
Well I feel better than I did when I was 30. As far as cholesterol I just had blood work and mine is perfect.
Maybe not for everyone but it works for me
