Results after high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)
Fortunately, I (@ 77 years old) qualified to ablate my 3+4 tumors on the right side of my prostate gland through a HIFU procedure. Performed @ Mayo Phoenix by Dr. Frendl's team. It's been three weeks now since surgery and I have no further tests until mid October, but, my recovery experience, to date, as follows:
• Catheter after surgery sucks but pulled after only one week so no big deal.
• No incontinence. A week, after catheter removal, I was peeing a "steady" weak stream with no starts & stops and emptying the tank. (much better than before surgery)
• No pain (except for a tender throat for about a week)
• No ED. Yep, I tested that.
I am absolutely amazed at this progress and thank my wonderful team.

This is great news for me. I hope to have HIFU performed but the size of my prostate may be problematic and I am 4+3. Seeing the Doc later this month.
I believe that will be a very close call but I do hope the mapping lets you qualify. Best of luck.
I did not qualify for HIFU as Dr. Frendel said I had calcifications that might block the ultrasound and he did not want to make me his guinea pig. So, I did the five-proton radiation treatment instead. Great doctor!!
Sorry you didn’t make the cut and, I agree, Dr. Frendl is the best! I wish you the best on your recovery.
Three-month PSA was undetectable. So, all is good so far and no side effects and at 74 can't ask for more.
Wonderful!!!
Is this the HIFU that use’s ultrasound? Was it covered by Medicare?
Thanks for the info. Hifu doesn’t get enough coverage here. I considered it but was worried that the recurrence rate was a tad high. I went with proton therapy but it was not a slam dunk.
Glad to hear that it went well and the side effects were minimal.
Medicare began covering HIFU in January.
Yes, use’s ultrasound and, as dgd1953 replied, covered by Medicare since January of this year.
