Hiatal Hernia
I would love to hear commentary from people who have a hiatal hernia and what you do for it or have done for it. I was given a cardiac scan of my heart area for something and the scan 'accidentally' picked up that I have a hiatal hernia (totally unrelated to cardiac issues). I want to know what has worked for others. Yes, I have a doctor but feedback from actual patients is beneficial as well. I am not looking for medical advice for my own situation, just wondering about what has worked or not worked for you. Thanks.

I’m not a doctor, but I had surgery for hiatal hernia a year ago. I refused to do those tests. I had an endoscopy and barium swallow. I thought those two tests were enough!
My GI doc and surgeon told me if the hernia was small , it was best to do nothing unless it was causing problems.
I had a 8cm hiatal hernia. After an onslaught of necessary testing from gastro I was referred to surgery. To ensure it would be successful I had to have a RNY at the same time. It was done robotically in early June. It was not an easy surgery, a two day stay, and came home on oxygen for just a couple of days. I feel like a new person now, no more symptoms from the hernia. Before if I ate one bite too much or the wrong thing my chest would hurt, not anymore. I gave up carbonated drinks a long time ago and like you I don’t think I will ever add them back in my life. Best thing I did - my surgical team was stellar!!!! I am also a Mayo breast cancer survivor, best care ever.
I had those tests with the Gastro doctor, but now the "surgeon" will not do the surgery without those 2 tests !! at least he is being thorough for safety.
But I need to get my horrific cough ( gagging and throwing up at times ) that I've had for over ten yrs. once or twice a day and embarrassing when out to dinner !!! hopefully corrected. Surgeon thinks it will take care of it. I never knew I had a hernia.
Are you saying that your sister got osteoporosis from taking Esomeprazole? I was on it for a year and half. I have osteoporosis so this is alarming! I also have a hiatal hernia and Gerd and now a redundant colon that is causing all kinds of issues. I stopped the Esomeprazole because one of the side effects is constipation which I have an extreme case. I need to take something for the reflux simply because I feel awful when I don't but also, I am afraid I'll get Esophageal cancer. There are no good answers.
Oh dear that sounds awful and it sounds exactly like my cough except my hernia is smaller. So far. I’m always afraid that my wracking will enlarge it! It really does translate into a quality of life thing. I’ve avoided the procedures you’re talking about and instead watch my food intake and take 10mg Omeprazole every morning, Pepcid before dinner. I will still cough til I gag often and it is exhausting but the diet modifications and not eating for hours before bed helps a bit. Others here have done that 24hour test. Hope someone here can ease your mind about it. Good luck.
I take Omeprazole also, but don't want to keep taking it ! So many medicines cause other problems to organs , etc. I want to eliminate the cough and hoping to increase my stamina ! Doctor says he thinks it will
- I play a lot of pickleball and like biking , etc.
I’m not saying that was the total cause of her osteoporosis but dr. Said it definitely contributed to it. I know how you feel like dammed if you do dammed if you don’t. There are not any easy answers. ❤️
