Adding Oral Estrogen on Post menopause woman

Posted by sandy0257 @sandy0257, Jul 12, 2023

I’m 66 years old with no breast cancer. Do any of you have experience adding a low dosage oral estrogen to maintain or encourage bone growth?

Keep us posted. Is there a reason why no Progesterone? Did the dr recommend not too?

I’m just asking to learn, as I want to see if I can get on that patch. I have also learned some people do use progesterone too; however, I don’t know anymore than that.

If you have had a hysterectomy you can go on estrogen alone. In fact, that is the safest way to take estrogen. If you still have a uterus, you have to also take progesterone to protect from uterine cancer.

I had a hysterectomy at forty and only needed just the estrogen, not progesterone. But most women I know are on both. Google ERT treatment for osteoporosis and check out what the rest of the world is doing. A recent study in England is worth reading.

Can you give me the name of the study, or attach the link if you come across it?

I have added estrogen and progestrone together. Based on recommendations from my gyno. However, my bone specialist says it does not realy help with severe osteoporosis

My encronoligist says it helps prevents heart attacks. Since Evenity has been black boxed because of potential heart attacks, I have elected to stay on the estrogen and progesterone.

I don't think anyone really knows at this point.

Try googling twenty or thirty yrs ago regarding ERT. It was discontinued due to a few deaths and cancer. But it was flawed as the nurses were older and used both estrogen and progesterone. Many felt that estrogen was safe, and progesterone was not. But we will no know as no more studies have confirmed either. Very sad that nobody has not run any more large trials.

What is considered serious osteoporosis? Anything 3.00 and over for this hips? What about the spine?

I have also been on estrogen and progesterone for 9 months. The only side effect is that I have more soreness ( usually in mid back) and bloating. I’m wondering if it’s from the hormones or if my bones are getting worse. It’s so hard to tell. It’s not actually pain, just like muscle soreness. Do you have any side effects from HRT?

I had a hysterectomy at 55 and am considering HRT or ERT at age 71 (for the first time). I think my osteoporosis "specialist," with whom I have a followup appointment in 2 weeks, will suggest Prolia, which I will reject. I assume she will reject Estrogen. I have a followup appointment with a cardiologist (whose office has performed EKG, echo cardiogram and stress test with normal results) next week. I plan to ask him about HRT or ERT. I also have an appointment with my gyn in 3 weeks to discuss HRT/ERT. My lumbar spine BMD is -4.5 (hologic DXA) and -3.8 (GE DXA). I want do whatever I can to stop bone loss without taking osteo drugs. I am hoping that Estrogen will help. Although I understand there are some side effects, Estrogen Therapy appears to be more "natural" and less scary than Prolia.

Estrogen does more to maintain bones rather than build bone density. With those scores, you really might consider a bone builder like Forteo or Tymlos first and then go on estrogen to maintain (if you can get it prescribed by your doc. If not, perhaps through Alloy Health you can). After years of trying to build my bones naturally and suffering even greater loss, I finally accepted that I would need a drug. My drug of choice was Forteo due to the fact that it restored bone density predominantly in the spine and because it was the most "natural" of the options being that it is parathyroid hormone which the body recognizes. Once I was finished with the full course, I went on bioidentical hormones which has maintained my gains.
