Hiatal Hernia

Posted by cantbelievethis @cantbelievethis, Jul 13, 2023

I would love to hear commentary from people who have a hiatal hernia and what you do for it or have done for it. I was given a cardiac scan of my heart area for something and the scan 'accidentally' picked up that I have a hiatal hernia (totally unrelated to cardiac issues). I want to know what has worked for others. Yes, I have a doctor but feedback from actual patients is beneficial as well. I am not looking for medical advice for my own situation, just wondering about what has worked or not worked for you. Thanks.

You have really been through it. Hope you are feeling better. So far I’m ok. Doing everything I can. Will be not go PPI route ever again. My poor sister has a broken back from osteoporosis from emperzole. Also is investigating kidney damage. Why do they approve these drugs if they have such horrible side effects? Stay well.

For anyone who wants to make sense of this article:
From BMC Medicine research 9/22 on PPIs and dementia:
“…The incident rate of all-cause dementia among proton pump inhibitor users was 1.06 events per 1000 person-years, compared with 0.51 events per 1000 person-years among non-users...”
So isn’t that like .1% as opposed to .05% incidence? Which none of us wants obviously but is pretty minuscule? I’d include the link but don’t know how to 🤷‍♀️

I just had a nissen fundaplication. I haven't felt this good in 14 years. Depending on the size of your hiatal hernia, you might need to raise your bed to a 30 degree angle to sleep. I can now sleep flat and have had no issues. The trade off for me is easy. No straws, no carbonated drinks (I haven't had any for 9 years) small meals , soft food, chew well. Drink after each bite. If I do eat bread dunk it in a liquid. My esophagus is weak and doesn't push food down like it should. Dr Edwards Jax Mayo is the best and made this as easy as possible. I suggest you use him.

If you have a large hiatal hernia, it would be best to have it repaired.

I have had a horrible cough for over ten years, and my doctor sent me to a pulmonologist, an allergist, etc. and NO one told me to go to a Gastro doctor, so I did so on my own as I "felt" it was between my lungs and esophagus so was diagnosed with a 5 cm hernia. The surgeon recommended what you had done , but I am nervous it won't go well. Can you tell me more about yours ?? ,, size, etc. I am a "foodie" and a cook, but try to eat healthy, no carbonated drinks -don't like them anyway !! I am an athlete, although much older, I play pickle ball and biking but feel that my stamina would also be better, besides not gagging with an uncontrollable cough ,sometimes out in public !! ugh !! sleep?? , would LOVE to sleep better !!!!
PS I next have to have 2 tests before he will do anything, very nervous as they have to stick a tube up my nose ,down my throat and has to stay in for 24 hr. !!!!
1 - espphageal manometry
2 - 2h ph testing
