@SusanEllen66, @californiazebra, and all...I hate you can't help out the birds with feeders and a bath. I have a condominium and I have about 6 feeders with sunflower seeds, peanuts, wild bird seed, a special seed mixture with fruit and nuts, and now only 1 birdbath with a little spray. I can't keep them all clean and full always due to my various health issues as they arise, but do my best and attempt to limit the guilt! We have a rat population in my building due to some soffit issues not being repaired properly and an empty condo left with a mess. Those have both been fixed now, so we're working on ridding the building attics of rats.
My birdseed feeders don't help, for sure, as I do occasionally see rats at some. But, we've put out large black traps to kill poison them and are getting it under control. I talked with my neighbors and they've been wonderful. We have a creek at the back of the property and have had rats, raccoons, rabbits, and other small fellas in the woods, but rarely do they invade our buildings.
I would miss my birds if I couldn't keep feeding them. They bring such pleasure, especially during the covid years. I live alone and with health issues, have been somewhat isolated for several years anyway. The birds are a real joy to me. I know them and consider them friends, part of the family almost. They know me as well, so it's pure joy!
I have a couple of pictures for you I'll send from my phone. I took them from the 7th floor at the Davis Building at Mayo Florida last week. I thought you might like seeing what the campus looks like from that perspective. It's quite lovely. Will attach in a few, by cell...
Blessings all...elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth @ess77
So glad you are able to keep your bird feeders up! So fun to have different birds coming to visit. Wish I had a private, fenced yard for all that.
It has been so hot, I've been putting out some water high up in my patio for the squirrels during the day, but dump it at sunset so I'm not supplying the rats and mice at night. Never down low for coyotes. If the squirrels don't have water, they often bite holes in the above ground watering systems in the garden or chew the rubber off sprinkler heads, so...
I chase off the coyotes if they get near my condo and squirrels and when I had smallish dogs -- scary. But now that my dogs are gone, I love getting pix of them on my walks. They are after small prey, not me. He does look a bit ominous in that face on pic, but really he was more concerned about me than the other way around.
Cardinals are so beautiful! Glad yours are back! How fun to have your feeders and bird bath! I could just sit and watch the various wildlife all day long. Love it!
