Has anyone improved bone density without meds?

Posted by naomid @naomid, Mar 21, 2023

I have a very problematic dental history and will continue to need additional root canals and implants. I also have Sjogren's Syndrome and want to avoid any drugs that cause rheumatic symptoms. Other issues in my health history make all of the meds risky for me. That said, I work out almost daily, lift weights, maintain a healthy diet, take all the recommended supplements, and get most of my calcium nutritionally. My endocrinologist wants me to take an infusion/injectable drug. I dread the side-effects, yet I'm afraid of fracturing, which hasn't happened over the many years I have had osteoporosis. That said, my numbers are getting worse (-3.2 spine, -3.1 hip). I need to do something more than I've been doing, and am at a loss. I need hope and solutions I can be at peace with. Thanks for any comments or suggestions!

I had no reactions to Forteo but of course, everyone is different. Tymlos works similarly and is something you could explore as well.

When first diagnosed with osteo, I asked my endocrinologist to put in an order for PT for me. I was lucky in that she knew of someone who was an expert in osteoporosis who then taught me what movements to avoid and how to modify others. Sherri Betz is an osteoporosis-trained practitioner as well as Margaret Melio. You can search their videos which will get you started on establishing an exercise practice.

@dreamjean1958 that is incorrect info about Forteo and Tymlos. Even before the warning about cancer was lifted, the timing was 2 years. The time limit has been removed for Forteo. The cancer warning has been lifted for both Forteo and Tymlos. Not a single human has gotten bone sarcoma from either. There is a lot of outdated and incorrect info online.

I just saw an endocrinologist in Rochester Minn. March 2023. I wanted to take Forteo
. He said No . It can cause bone cancer if on it for an extended time. I would hope . They know what the facts are . The internet . Has a lot of fake news . 2 different specialists and my
Family
Dr refuse to order me a prescription for it. Also called Midwest Brain & Spine . Unit for Osteroporosis . . She also said . No .

I respectfully disagree. I think it depends on the PT person AND your condition etc. everyone is different and I only speak of my impression. I love it and what it had done for my flexibility, balance and well being. Some PT are trained differently and adverse to anything they don’t do or know. I would NEVEE say anything is an answer for anyone.. but each should choose their tools!
I eat 10 prunes a day.. would that make someone else cringe? Maybe! You do you!
Do I lift weights and jump? Yes! Is that bad for your case? Maybe!
There are supplement profiles suggested..you pick!
I love the Fishman program and the research. I choose to try and not get deterred by one PT persons viewpoint unless he/she had throughly researched the program for ME. The twists are not a requirement. Maybe they are an answer? For me? Maybe!
Your body, your choice, your delivery method.
I wish you good health on your journey!

Hi barbakp!
I was very disappointed when my P.T. gave the poses a thumbs-down. I had taken a look at the exercises and people’s comments about them, and they seemed like a great way to get in a simple
bone strengthening routine. (But I must confess, the bow tie thing was a bit off-putting!). However, my P.T. had direct knowledge of a class he had taught and she was underwhelmed by his grasp of certain medical principles. I am also dealing with scoliosis on top of the OP, so that may have entered into her assessment. But if it works for you, great! Thanks for commenting.

@dreamjean1958 have you had metastatic cancer? Radiation? There are certain groups who should not take Forteo or Tymlos. But again not a single human has gotten bone cancer from these meds over the course of 2 years and Forteo is being studied for 36 months. My doctor is chief of endocrinology at a top hospital and I have seen two others as well.

Noone knows what happens after two years. The studies were for two years and that is the prescribed time frame. NOONE has gotten cancer in two years. These meds are most effective the first year.

Rats got bone sarcomas on huge doses. The black box warning for humans have been lifted.

It is possible that in 3, or 4, or 10, or 20 years on these, someone might get cancer. Maybe that is what they meant. But over two years the warning is lifted- no cases at all. Here is just one announcement:

I am surprised they said no but maybe for an insurance reason? I would clarify all this with the doctor because if they are experts, there may have been some misunderstanding.

I am told not to take Vitamin D3 - by my physician. Thank you, however, for your input. About two hours in the spread for me as well for calcium and Magnesium.

As I recall and this has been over a year ago it was because I had too much of it in my system according to some blood work. Thank you for asking.

I had early menopause at 44; took nothing. Now, at 82, have osteoporosis in my spine, one disc. My doctor recommends Evenity; I am indecisive. Am looking into natural paths, will read some of the recommended books by Mayo individuals on this site. Will see my endocrinologist in late August, with a list of concerns, and then make a decision. Any suggestions are welcome.

What is Black cohosh?
