Wigs! Hair loss with TC chemo
Two weeks after first round of chemo, my hair is starting to shed. Needing all your input on wigs. Is it worth getting one with real human hair? What are the must haves to keep your scalp comfortable? What materials are the softest? Any other pointers?

I was given 1 wig by a company that gives to cancer patients where I live and I purchased 1. I didn't wear either one. They just didn't look like me (I was 58 when diagnosed). So I wore a bandana around house and a cooling helmet liner you put under motorcycle helmets with a fedora hat when I went out. Even after my hair grew back, I still wear the hats!
During chemo and after i used a natural, organic blend of oils by’Ancient Greek Remedy’ to keep my scalp healthy but i liked it so much i used it on my nails and cuticles and after a shower i just lathered it on. I was 59 at the time so it became part of my regimen to keep my skin looking nice.
My hair did come back very curly after first (i had waves in my hair before but not curls). I loved keeping it short for awhile as it looked nice and was so carefree. I have grown it out more just for fun. My oral chemo has turned it white but that seems to be trendy now.
There is an oil i used for my eyebrows by Essential Eyebrow Solution, i had half of my eyebrows left and used my favorite brow pencil by it cosmetics.
Don’t forget your nails and cuticles. ‘Hope and beauty chemo companions’ had a lovely simple oil for nails and cuticles.
Check with your oncologist as mine told me no perfumes, dyes or anything artificial so i choose simple, few ingredients.
Good luck on your journey, your beauty will always shine through, even though we may not feel it. ☺️
Honestly I used a washcloth and the one soap I could use without gagging. All the soaps say they are unscented, but the only one I found that was truly unscented was aveeno. This kept my skin and scalp healthy. If you still have any hair to speak of that won’t work, but I didn’t have even an eyelash. Lol
What shampoo are you using now?
7 weeks post last chemo and I’m still shedding. Is this normal? I even used a cold cap!
Yes. I'm on week 10 of weekly treatments. I have almost no hair, but it is still falling out.
I would skip purchasing a human hair wig and go straight to synthetic wigs which are fabulous, very real looking and a lot less costly.
My favorite brands were Paula Young and Raquel Welch.
Although it’s a shock to lose your hair, you’re going to be okay. ♥️🙏♥️
I use free and clear shampoo I purchased at amazon. It says no dyEd, fragrance, etc, I had issues with other shampoos but this one seems work for me.
Sadly, yes it will continue for some time after your last treatment, mine finally stopped coming out a couple months after treatment. I didn’t use a cold cap, but mine started growing back after about 3 months. It seemed to take forever, but once it started, it came I pretty quickly, and white and curly. Bozo the clown curly, lol. I had no hair left so it was easy to tell when it started coming in again.
It did straighten out a little but remained pretty white.
Did you shorten your hair before chemo? Have you been wearing a covering like a wig, or scarf?
The cancer society will give you a wig through designated beauticians.
I had a nice wig but i hated wearing it. My hair came back quicly and I was happier wearing scarves and hats. I loved my new hair. It was curly and the best I had ever had. I was 79 at the time. I'm 81now, my hair is straight but full.
Thank you. I did cut my hair to shoulder length prior to starting chemo. I wear a wig only when I really need to. I have some hair left at the bottom of my head and tie it to the hair on a hat wig to keep it in place.
