Taking Miralax and Meta Mucil in the same day

Posted by docm @docmeehan, Jun 11, 2023

Hi everyone who is living with abdominal adhesions. I have been trying to learn to live with this for several months now without much help from my doctors. I'm on a very low fiber diet and take a small dose of Miralax daily on doctor's orders. I normally have two or three soft stools daily but for about the last month I have been having an episode of diarrhea once a day. this is not every day but is happening pretty frequently.

My question is can I also take Meta Mucil daily to help add bulk to my stool?

Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and good luck with your own adhesions.

I have microscopic colitis and IBS. I take a daily dose of Miralax and one dose of Citrucel fiber. My GI Dr said I could even mix them together. She recommended Citrucel over Metamucil because it's less likely to produce excess gas. Citrucel is methycellulose vs the psyllium husk in Metamucil.

I take miralax daily. I also had the same ... One movement of very loose/diarrhea per day sometimes. But because I have IBS it's hard to predict when those days will be. Sometimes that happens when I have a cold or virus too. Or if I ate something that disagrees with me. When I'm on an antibiotic that I know produces diarrhea, I sometimes cut my miralax in half or even a quarter. Miralax is only a stool softener, so it pulls water into your colon to soften up your stool. That's literally all it does, and it is so helpful for those of us who are chronically constipated.

Does anyone take Meta Mucil and Imodium in the same day? Is there any contraindication to using this? I find that this is the only way I can control the liquid diarrhea of colitis. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. How do others deal with colitis?

Thanks for advice!

I am unable to be very mobile and have been having frequent problems with constipation. I’ve been taking Miralax daily but it doesn’t do the job.
I’m wondering if I also take Metamucil capsules if it would help?

This problem has made me very nervous about going to the frequent doctor appointments I have. I’d appreciate any suggestions.

I have been advised by my doctor to take Restoralax (called Miralax in the States) daily, but the label states it should not be taken for longer than seven days. That concerns me - especially since it is pure propylene glycol. Isn’t that a plastic base? I have been told Citrucel also is basically “plastic”.

I took two tablespoonsful of just psyllium husk for years and was regular as clockwork, but after my recent colonoscopy I have been constipated. The fact that I developed anal fissures even before the colonoscopy has been a further aggravation.

Since being constipated after the colonoscopy I have been taking a tablespoonful of psyllium husk (generic form of Metamucil) with a teaspoonful of Restoralax (Canadian label for the American Miralax) and it has helped, but the Restoralax label indicates it should not be taken for longer than seven days. I wonder why …?

@ripley and @uma1 yesterday I went to a health food store and discussed my concern about taking Restoralax and the assistant there suggested Go-Lax Bowel Formula by a company called Healthology. I came home and took a tablespoonful of psyllium fibre as usual, followed by one capsule of Go-Lax. Had a bowel movement within three hours!

Then just before getting ready for bed I ate two prunes. I don’t know if it was the Go-Lax, or the two prunes (four recommended, but I took just two because my potassium levels hover at the borderline) and around noon today I had another movement.

I don’t know which one is working - perhaps both - but it’s been a real relief (pun intended)!
