Osteoporosis due to paralysis

Posted by ncsblj6430 @ncsblj6430, Jul 2, 2023

I am a 55 yo female who has been paralyzed from the waist down for 37 years. I have osteoporosis in my lower extremities. I recent suffered a Fracture of the right femoral neck with superior displacement of the distal fracture fragment. Would taking collagen help repair or prevent future fractures?

What does your doctor say? Have you seen an endocrinologist? My doc (and my research/reading) would recommend Forteo or Tymlos in your situation. They are bone building drugs and also have some beneficial effect on bone healing. Evenity is another medication that both grows bone and lessens turnover but I am not sure if it has the same effect on healing so I would rely on an endo.

I’m wondering if you have looked into vibration therapy for osteoporosis? In Europe it’s an approved therapy. The Royal Osteoporosis Society in UK has information. The lifepro vibration machine provides what seems to be the correct rate ( in hertz).

No I have not. I have never heard of vibration therapy. I will need to research this. Thanks for the info.

According to my doctor i should only use a vibration machine that is low intensity. Marodyne makes one and I just started using it. Whole body vibration can cause eye issues and tinnitus in those of us who are older. I do not want to take meds so I am hoping this will help. The machines are expensive. There is another one made in the US but it is more expensive than the marodyne.
