Boniva (ibandronate) and IBS-D
I've had IBS-D for years. After a diagnosis of osteoporosis, I began taking ibandronate on the 10th of June. It's a once-a-month pill, so I haven't had my second dose yet. About a week later, I started having diarrhea almost daily. There isn't pain, like a bad IBS-D attack, but the bathroom better be close.
Does anyone here have IBS-D and take ibandronate? Has your diarrhea problem worsened, or have you discovered how to take ibandronate and live well? 🙂
Thank you!

Both my doc and Dr. McCormick have told me that Boniva is not a good choice, but I forget why. Can you try alendronate instead? Are you eligible for Tymlos, Forteo or Evenity? If your bones are bad, those bone builders are more effective if taken before bisphosphonates but insurance often only covers bone builders if you fail a bisphosphonate (or two) or if you have fractures. Maybe you can count this as trying and failing Boniva!
My doc wanted me to start with Boniva and work up to the next med. I started taking hyoscyamine for the IBS-D and I’m not sure about it either! I’ll see how the next week or so go.
Thanks!
Hi, lesnkc
I was on hyacyamine for abominal pain due to IBS. I was on Actonel for 10 which caused erosion in my esophagus. I was put on 80 mg omeprazole for a year. A few months later I
developed diarrhea and can relate . Once stopping Actonel and omeprazole, I managed to get it under control with probiotics and gradually adding more fiber to my diet. How, a family member developed diarrhea after being put on Fosamax and then Actonel. Same results. Please discuss your issues with your doctor. Diarrhea can cause nutritional deficiency that promotes osteoporosis. Best wishes for good health.
I will talk to the doc. Thank you for replying.
