Over-Expectation of Tipping These Days!

Posted by covidstinks2023 @covidstinks2023, Jun 17, 2023

Please no negative comments precious folks. Am I the only one that feels like tipping has gotten out of hand? I am an excellent tipper for services rendered. I tip my Hairdresser, Grocery Delivery, Pizza Delivery, Restaurants, Online pickup for food orders (I struggle with this one!) , Manicurist (birthday only) & Massage Therapist (Very rarely have these anymore), etc., I like everyone else am on a budget and everything has gotten so expensive. The services rendered have gone up in price as well and I truly understand that. Some thoughts please. Thank you and blessings to all!

We tip for good service rendered. Always between 15 to 20% depending on the service. We will go below 15 if the service is horrible.

Keep in mind that our waiter/waitress make below minimum wages at some restaurants. As for the hair care I’m a constant as I’ve had the same barber for years. As for my wife she has 2 to 3 people that do her hair. Colorist, stylist, and cosmetician, depending on her services needed. They get tipped individually.

When in Europe tipping is hit and miss. If we are in a tourist area it’s almost expected. In non tourist areas it is not. Same for Asia.

We also try to make it special. Typically never on a charge or debt card. I like using dollar coins or $2 bills that I pickup at our bank.

There are times if our group is larger than 6 or 8 there is a mandatory gratuity that is added to the meals.

Let’s not forget in the United States we have a federal minimum for food and beverage workers, so the government says you can pay them a pittance because they are tipped employees. Then at the end of the shift they add up everything they sold and a percentage of that is taxed wether they were tipped or not.
I remember working in food service during college and getting a minus paycheck a few times. Yep, I had to pony up money to pay for my tip tax, as the taxes outweighed my wages.
This is especially common in the higher ticket price food establishments or high volume food establishments. Unless the service is truly crappy, I will always tip more than the taxed amount. If I can’t afford it, I eat at home.

...yes waiters/waitresses are "expected" to have may tips and declared income, now that we are tipping other employees, not only in food industry, are they going to have to declare income based, now, on receiving tips I wonder!

I hope not, this has never been a fair way to handle this. Also the folks who say people should not accept jobs that pay so little, should have to eat at home or take a turn doing really exhausting work for a pittance.

Please no more tips and I ALWAYS tip the 20% but it's so ridiculous now EVERYONE thinks they should get a TIP and it's getting out of hand as for wait staff and bar peeps they need hourly it's TIME ⏰

And I used to work in the industry and my sister has for over 20 years and even so I truly believe they should get paid $17-$25 an hour depending on the restaurant ENOUGH with it already and yeah you CAN get another job somewhere else if your not HAPPY with living on TIPS this industry needs an overhaul sorry but it does and I don't feel sorry that they get paid under minimum wage that's what they decided to except instead of saying let's start standing up and say we're done with the TIPS it's not ENOUGH for us to live on and with prices for FOOD going up so high then a TIP I'm sorry but many people ARE staying home and cooking because it's way too MUCH and it's the person who works in the industry who's OUT the money and that's why it NEEDS to change 😵‍💫

Personally I'd rather not have wait staff just a counter is chill and I'll be happy to SERVE myself place my order on a pad at the table and bring my empty plate to the counter that's WHY places like Culver's, Panera, Chipotle, Hibachi Grill, Golden Coral, Mob Pizza even food trucks and grocery stores that have hot food & salad bars do better nowadays and then of course the fast food restaurants too but I'm not into fast food and to be quite honest going out to eat really isn't that FUN anymore it's too expensive now I used to enjoy it but it's just not the same anymore 😔

And as for hair and nails I really think it's not OKAY as well and I still tip but if your paying $75-$100 just for a haircut and then they want a TIP too it's ridiculous how about if they own their chair and whatever they charge they make it clear so now they need a TIP too and in a full staff salon they think you should tip EVERYONE like the shampooer it's too MUCH so tired of it .. 🥴

How about TIPPING those who don't get TIPS like the CART guy or gal at your local grocery store or the bagger I've given them a gift cards many times start doing that it'll make a difference it's really TIME for a change... 🌈

I'm not for tipping to be quite honest pay the people what they NEED

I'm not saying I don't tip I'm just over it my sister works in the industry and has for years and she's a big tipper but of course she is 😵‍💫 and she knows I don't like the industry for that reason why do I have to TIP you when you chose a job that didn't pay well

It's time they ask for hourly wages like waiters should be paid $17-$19 an hour at least nowadays I mean come on ALREADY enough

Even at like Panera or like you said before Dunkin' Donuts COME ON enough with it already and tipping for HAIR your already paying ENOUGH money for your hair to be done why do you have to tip them too my goodness

And then ask for a certain % that's REAL nerve unbelievable it's a TIP I give you what I want to give you not you tell me what I have to give you this is unbelievable how did we let this happen 🥴

The whole tipping thing was created by gangsters and then it just latched on what a horrible concept they need to get rid of it with today and how it is and how much money everything cost they NEED to get rid of it it's too MUCH 🌈

Wow. Someone doesn't like tipping. While I disagree with essentially everything you've written here, I'm curious where you came up with the idea that tipping was created by gangsters. I can find no reference to this. Can you?

How's she under paid she tells you how much for the cut then she makes the money on it unless she has to give a percentage to the owner of the salon and you tip her too I'm sure so she's making good money..

Especially if she's cutting women's hair and if she does COLOR and ALL the other stuff she's even making MORE👍🏻

Hair stylists make very good money and if they don't they're not good, fresh out of school or they work at a crappy place..😵‍💫

And you could trim your own HAIR but I wouldn't advise it trust me I know but what I would suggest is if you go to a NEW stylist for the first time you don't tip them for the first cut WHY first of all most hair stylists if they're GOOD they will not do a crappy job just because you didn't tip and of course it's the first time so they're not gonna know anyways ..💇‍♀️

This is a way you can see if you like her/him enough to come back and if so you can give them a NICE tip if you like🌈

Well they owned many hotels and restaurants and they ran unions and construction but my BAD for getting it not quite right 😂

Well I'm sorry you disagree I never said I didn't TIP I'm just tired of it everywhere you turn it's too much when you don't have much and I'm a very giving person I'm just spent from it and then many restaurants not ALL are giving you a lot less for your money and crappy food as well it's a shame

This story I was told years ago and it made sense but hey if GOOD people brought TIPS to the states then so be it 😵‍💫👍🏻😵‍💫

Respectfully, you can’t know that I have been trimming my own at, least when I have hair for years. I did take my elderly aunt to a salon for years until she passed and the hairdresser charged 20.00 for a full cut or 5.00 for bang trim. I would give her a card with money at Christmas and on her birthday.
You also can’t know if she was good bad or otherwise. She did an excellent job and I would go to her in a heartbeat if I needed to.
You can’t know that she doesn’t rent her stations out, she has two employees that she pays more than she pays herself because they are single mothers.
Just a thought, but I might try to look for ways to uplift others, and walk a mile in others shoes so to speak. I look for ways to help out and be of service when I can.
