Hi Angie, It's good to hear that the ulcer on the top of hammertoe is doing better. That's what my ortho doc was checking for when I had my last consult about my hammertoes. Fortunately I didn't have any ulcers or infections on the toes which could require surgery. He told me to make sure my shoes had a wide toe box and the material on top was softer and flexible so as not to rub on the top of the toes.
My only worry about the surgery would be if it would make things worse, which my doctor mentioned could happen. Did your doctor or podiatrist offer any suggestions to help with the toe pain?
Hi John, I'm just thinking of the surgery have not decided yet. It seems like every shoe's I get hurt my feet. I did get a pair od Ortho tennis shoes and the toe box even hurts my toes but only on the foot that has the worse hammertoe. I wear slippers all the time, the kind you can wear in and outside. I'm glad it's summer because in the winter slippers are not good.

I have not heard that the surgery might not help with the hammertoes. Wow that's good to know. I have other ailments going now for Acupuncture for my back pain, had 2 sessions so far and it does feel better not completely but I'm going to keep going! I keep saying I need a new body lol. I also say maybe OI need the needles all over my body, another lol. I'm just so thankful that the MM is not so bad and taking my chemo pills do not bother me. Hope your doing good John and thanks for all of your replies!!!

I had extreme bunions which had surgery about 20 years ago. Hammertoes on 2nd toes were bad also; the Dr tried to fix one by removing the knuckle in the hammertoe (it doesn’t bend now). But that little shortened toe tries to stick up and cross anyway! I left the other one as it was. Both irritating, but there sure are worse things as time goes on.

I have hammer toes. I don't know anyone with a successful outcome for hammer toe surgery. Often the hammer toes return

I place adhesive foam padding (Amazon) or Dr. Scholl's Moleskin padding around my hammer toes. It helps a lot.
Got my pair at Amazon under toe separators I’m happy with them
These shoes are amazingly comfortable.
