Over-Expectation of Tipping These Days!
Please no negative comments precious folks. Am I the only one that feels like tipping has gotten out of hand? I am an excellent tipper for services rendered. I tip my Hairdresser, Grocery Delivery, Pizza Delivery, Restaurants, Online pickup for food orders (I struggle with this one!) , Manicurist (birthday only) & Massage Therapist (Very rarely have these anymore), etc., I like everyone else am on a budget and everything has gotten so expensive. The services rendered have gone up in price as well and I truly understand that. Some thoughts please. Thank you and blessings to all!

Like you we are tippers especially as my now adult children worked in places from chip stands to fine dining Lake Louise Hotel - to help put themselves through University or College. Also both me and spouse working for low wages - not in service industry - would have liked a tip once in a while... but what we tend to do now that we can afford to tip is to do so even when not necessary/typical - like the delivery man, mail carrier at Christmas... garbage collectors then too: or had poor service!! ... but feel that it (tipping) should be based on service etc... not be dictated to anyone; maybe we heavy/frequent tippers seem to equal it all out with non-tippers? We've had some pretty happy delivery people just by giving a few dollars for a coffee! (and how many employers still pay under minimum wage, expecting balance to be made up to employees by customers tipping). I do agree it has gotten out of hand in many places!

My life has me home most of the time so I have very few opportunities to tip anybody with the exception of my hairstylist. The way things are done here, I never have face to face contact the trash collector, or mail person. So I don’t tip them for the holidays. I don’t know who they are!
Of course, when I go out to eat I will tip 20%.
I don’t mind tipping for services rendered by someone who doesn’t earn minimum wage like restaurant employees. I don’t think it’s fair that they aren’t paid enough but that’s the traditional approach to their business.
SusanEllen66, I agree 100% and thank you for your positive answer. I only have a problem when it's expected and already put down how much of a tip I need to leave online and for when I call in and pick up an order they have already put the tip down. I am a generous tipper every where I go because I agree with you....everybody is struggling to make ends meet, especially the minimum wage earners. Our mailman is phenomenal and so we always remember him and our delivery drivers on special occasions. Bless you!
In European restaurants, and I don't know about other services, the tip has always been included in the bill, 20% I think. One is welcome to leave more if they see fit. We've begun to follow suit in the U.S. While tipping for these various services is an automatic for you or me, such is not the case with many, and they leave little or no tip to people who make very poor wages and depend on the tip. I think this is a reason why tips are now imposed. Where I live, near the Canadian border, our businesses depend on Canadian tourists to survive (which made things really difficult when the border was closed to most people during the worst of the pandemic.) But the point is that Canada uses the European system, where tips are included in the bills, "service compris". So what was happening is that many of our Canadian friends, accustomed to their tipping system, assumed tips were included on our side of the border, and left no tip, because they thought they had already tipped. This and the fact that many do NOT have your tipping ethics left our service staff, who depend on those tips to make close to a livable wage, in a bad spot financially. I support having the tip included, for these reasons, it makes the system more universal and consistent and the employees more likely to make a livable wage. I agree that everyone's living expenses have gone up, leaving many of us strapped for cash, service providers included. I feel like if you have the money to go out for dinner, have your nails and toes done, an automatic 20% gratuity is not going to hurt you as much as it will help those providing these services to you. Thank you for always tipping. You can always leave more if the service is great...
Yes, it is getting to be all over. My favorite one is the tip jar on the Dunkin Dounuts counter. Guess next it will be our doctors, bus drivers, policemen...

I meant to look up origin of "tipping" - maybe later! was it not because we received better than average service? by having 20 percent or any percent in with the bill means that , for example as my girls were before permanent jobs, one waitress could be awful and one waitress extremely helpful: who deserves the tip. To me including with bill deters "some" staff from doing their best. My daughter waitressed at Chateau Lake Louise and one everning Dudley Moore came in to eat and then , if I remember correctly, may have played piano but not sure about that part :-)... anyway she always was and still is good at what she does no matter how menial or high on the ladder, and he gave her $100 tip and this was a while ago when $100 seemed and was a lot of money!

I'm not saying I don't tip I'm just over it my sister works in the industry and has for years and she's a big tipper but of course she is 😵💫 and she knows I don't like the industry for that reason why do I have to TIP you when you chose a job that didn't pay well
It's time they ask for hourly wages like waiters should be paid $17-$19 an hour at least nowadays I mean come on ALREADY enough
Even at like Panera or like you said before Dunkin' Donuts COME ON enough with it already and tipping for HAIR your already paying ENOUGH money for your hair to be done why do you have to tip them too my goodness
And then ask for a certain % that's REAL nerve unbelievable it's a TIP I give you what I want to give you not you tell me what I have to give you this is unbelievable how did we let this happen 🥴
The whole tipping thing was created by gangsters and then it just latched on what a horrible concept they need to get rid of it with today and how it is and how much money everything cost they NEED to get rid of it it's too MUCH 🌈
Tipping in Canada is scattershot, there is no universal "system." Europe is the same. I have been given to understand that tips are never for the wait staff -- management and owner take a cut, as do the chef, headwaiter, bus boy, etc. When I see "service compris" or a specified tip, I know my waiter will only see a fraction of it, so if they were truly outstanding I slip them cash and leave it to them to share or not.
.... just did a quick google search and appears tipping started in England and was for extra good service ?? long long time ago, how things have changed, some for the better and some not so much! we keep a jar by our front door with various bits of money from paper money to coins and , for instances, minus 30C and delivery man waiting for me to get downstairs and open door, give him a few dollars for a coffee and surprised how happy he/she is... makes me feel a tiny bit happy too seeing their faces break into a thank you smile; then my daughter had new cleaning lady with very sad story and instead of 100, paid her 200... but still "our choice" from small to large "tips" - and if included in the price of a dinner, then its NOT a "tip" but an added charge, legit or not! J.M.O.
