I'm pretty sure they cannot tell there is no disease without removing it & testing it. Your question confused me. I had 5 lymph nodes removed. All were negative. What hurt the worst was the needle in the nipple before surgery - to inject the dye for the lymph nodes. They seemed surprised - when I told them that it HURT!! I'd like for them to get a needle injection in their nipple!!! 🙂

One in each breast at the same time by the 2 nurses so I wouldnt have to experience the pain twice. One of if Not the worst pain I have ever experienced; and I’ve had my share.

As someone commented before, a lymph node cannot be truly evaluated unless it is removed and sent to pathology for evaluation. The sentinel lymph nodes are those "first downstream from the tumor...would be the first to be cancerous in most cases. If the sentinel lymph nodes are negative and no other lymph nodes further downstream are enlarged or appear suspicious....they don't remove any more. If the sentinel lymph node or nodes come back positive for cancer then a lymph node dissection surgery is performed to remove more "downstream until they are negative or decide to look for metastasis...
