Osteoporosis and Frax score?
Recently diagnosed with osteoporosis (56) in femoral neck (-2.6) and osteopenia in hips (2.5), spine still good, so far. The endocrinologist said to start Reclast asap but didn't give me a Frax score (chance of fracture over next 10 yrs.) so I used the online calculator. It showed a score of 2.0% for hip fracture and 9.2% for major osteoporatic fracture. The Endocrinology Society recommends pharmalogical treatment if scores are at least 3.0% & 20%. I'm trying to get a 2nd opinion but it's hard to know where to turn and hard to get appointments that aren't far far in the future. Meanwhile I'm working on diet and exercise. I'm concerned about starting a medication too early or too late. Any advice or similar experiences?

No problem. Nobody should feel 'stupid'. Always room to learn!
Hi gigi4, most of literature I've read states that as women age and go through menopause there is less estrogen produced. Estrogen is like a gate keeper controlling certain bodily systems. So when there is low estrogen its more difficult for you body manage these systems. I'm not an expert and recommend a couple good books to read are Mayo Clinic on Osteoporoisis book by Anne E. Kearns, MD, PhD. and Great Bones by R. Keith McCormick.
Morning leeosteo~
So good to hear from you and what you are doing to enhance your life. It does come down to a comfort level that can be sustained..for the long haul...taking responsibility for ourselves, at first might seem hard to do..but in the long run..we're far better off for putting in the energy needed. I applaud all that are on this platform..as I feel you do as well. Whatever the decisions are that we make..I truly hope that they are good ones..made with thought and education. We didn't get this far to be put on a shelf..as an ad for an osteo drug says. I agree with that statement! We may overdue ourselves at times..but then we know enough to rest and heal. All we can do is strive to keep moving and 'dancing'....for sure in our hearts. If I may add....get a little 10$ pedometer..Walmart sells them...best thing ever to get one off the couch! Go fly away now.....
Any major side effects I'm tired of sides effects and I know calcium can be dangerous too to much of it can cause narrowing to the heart valves making you more susceptible to strokes so I hope the side effects aren't like that👍🏻
And my bones are pretty bad but no fractures to the spine I've had a couple car accidents that did some damage to my discs in my neck not good and well my hips are bone on bone I do have Osteoporosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis as well 😵💫
And I'm due to get my Bone Density test soon been getting them for awhile now and I'm not sure what FRAX percentages are all I know is my BONES are bad and the joints are too 😔
Last year in December I was leading over to grab a cake out of a case at the grocery store and I think I broke my rib I don't know what happened but it was very painful
But years prior to that I'm somebody that goes to festivals and I LOVE to DANCE and have a good time when my body allows me I'm a pretty good DANCER anyways I like to have FUN so because I'm petite which tends to be troublesome for us petite gals when it comes to our BONES it can be tough
Anyways for some reason people like to come up to me and grab me and pick me up and it's guys and gals by the way so CRAZY I don't know what the draw is my boyfriend is like it's so WEIRD I've had this happen a number of times I couldn't even stop the person and they grab me so fast one person crushed my ribs another one did it years later yeah 😵💫
So on my FULL BODY scan x-ray which I just had it showed TRAUMA to a couple of my ribs and two years ago I broke my wrist falling down I tripped because of a raised sidewalk that was the first time I broke a bone horrible 😔
@lovelyday Tymlos has definitely been tolerable with few side effects though I started at a low dose and moved up. With your wrist and rib fractures it sounds like a good idea to try! The pain of spinal fractures is long lasting for me so a side effect or two from Tymlos was acceptable for me but luckily they have not been bad for me.
Hi @lamay - Was wondering how you found the info and calculator for your Frax score as would like to know more about? Thanks .. Sandy
Hi Sandy,
I believe I used this site, https://frax.shef.ac.uk/FRAX/tool.aspx?country=9
I guess docs only give you a frax score if you have osteopenia, not osteoporosis. I will go for a second opinion in November and will ask new doc about usefulness of frax.
Good luck!
My frax score was on the report from the radiologist who issued the report
If your results are in MyChart, FollowMyHealth, or other patient portal, you might find your frax score there.
You can also ask for a more detailed report. My t-score didn't make sense to me and it was because I did not have the entire report in mychart. It did have the Frax scores, Z-score and TBS on it.
