Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement

I would like to know how many of you had problems moving your arm after having a reverse total shoulder replacement? How about pain afterwards? I've had nothing but problems since my surgery!

Had a reverse a few years ago and Im doing great. You can look forward to cessation of PAIN!
and be patient with the recovery. No one's recovery may be like yours. If yours takes longer it doesnt mean something is wrong. Good luck!

Thank you so much. Hearing positive outcomes is improving my fear and concerns. I'm not concerned about how long the recovery journey will take just that it all works!! Thanks again. So pleased to hear yours was a good outcome and you are pain free. I've been in tears twice today from pain.

You are absolutely right and I have tears in all four muscles! Thanks for commenting, it's helpful.

I'm scheduled to have reverse total shoulder replacement on left arm in August. Right now I have really good range of motion going up and good use of arm except for lateral movement and the arm is weak. I'm very worried whether I'm doing the right thing. My rotator cuff is torn fully through. Surgeon feels it is the right decision. I am in pain quite a lot and have been for about 2 1/2 years. Can anyone give me their experiences with this surgery? Ten years ago I had rotator cuff repair done on the right for massive tear and a bicep repair but surgeon says the left is irreparable. Help!!!! I'm very nervous about whether I'm making the right move.

Good afternoon @kcoxict. My reverse total shoulder replacement was 10 years ago. My surgeon called my rotator cuff......"the grand canyon of holes" after the first effort. He also tried a cadaver graft and it was a failure .

The total reverse was the last option and it went well. Did you know that you can now have a robotic surgery where the replacement has been specially designed to fit "your" shoulder? I am sure that will give you a better fit and stronger placement. If anything, that would be the item with the greatest importance. It will definitely guarantee a solid placement and a more accurate surgery.

I hope your pain finds that its journey in your body is over. Just work on your ROM. Mine is a little off so I look funny eating an ice cream cone. However, no pain makes life much more liveable. Good luck to you.

May you be free of suffering and the causes of suffering.
Chris

I had my RSP two years ago and my recovery has been great. I am also a massage therapist and I did my own rehab which included massage and exercises. I have also worked on a number of patients who had RSP surgery. I did encounter some who struggled with regaining their range of motion and associated pain. They had all had physio but it was massage that afforded them the greatest improvement. Myofascia massage as one of the techniques I used played a big role along with isometric exercises. It was slow going in some cases especially when you are limited by pain.
It is also imperative that you follow a regimen of stretches and when able, resistance movements, between treaments.

Hello, I had mine on January 23rd. The surgery was super quick and I was home the same day.
I'm an orthopedic nightmare, lol, with neck, spine and 3 hip replacements. (One revision)
I have pain which is affecting all of the above.
PT has been a problem. I had a great Home therapist, but Outpatient hasn't been good. (I just fired #3)
Too aggressive hands on and NO exercise.
All my muscles hurt, especially my rib cage and bicep. I'm using my arm and not babying it, but it doesn't help emotionally when PT 'professionals' tell you, "that shouldn't be".
Please keep posting!

It took quite a while to rebuild my right shoulder which had the reverse shoulder replacement surgery…..I am now 80 and can go swing dancing which really puts the shoulder through lots of turns, spins etc. I never gave up, and now it works almost normally.

That is wonderful. I had same operation & it also affected my hand. Had 80% nerve damage. Glad yours went so well.

I had mine about 7 weeks ago, 1 Aug. 2024. I’ve had no pain after the surgery. I was in pain before the SURGERY! Pain is gone. I’m doing PT right now. I am having a big problem with my external rotation! I see the orthopedic doctor next week. I’m not at all sure what is causing it. Once I find out I will post it.

Massive rotator tear and osteoarthritis. I had no choice but for tRSA.

Anyone have any idea what is keeping me from external ROM from my tRSA?
