Has anyone had a large decrease in bone density after one year

Posted by trathfon62 @trathfon62, Jun 6, 2023

Hi,
My BMD of the lumbar spine decreased by 7% in one year. I feel this is a very large jump and wondered if this has happed to others out there. I had a surgery which
Kept me from exercising for a couple months but it seems so drastic. I appreciate any feedback. I’m also wondering if there was an error with my first or second Dexascan. So hard to tell.

I have a chart of my DEXA's since 2001 and they jump around a bit so I look at trends. Were your tests done on the same machine? Dr. McCormick's new book Great Bones discusses various reasons for variation in DXA's, including the technician positioning things differently, as I remember. I had a large decrease one year but I was on cancer meds so it made sense. My other large decrease in one year was after menopause. In both cases the losses eased over time though they continued at a lower level.

Thanks!
I only had two Dexascans on the same machine (supposedly) one year apart. I want to get another one in November and hopefully that will help 🙂

Are you on a drug? I'm on Prolia. My spine improved by 10% but my hips declined by 9% to -3.2. It's very confusing and my doctors have no answers other than to recommend moving to Evenity. I'm not ready to do that yet so I'm staying on Prolia and changing my exercise routine.

Hi,
I know. That doesn’t make sense to me either. I am not on a drug yet. My doctor said Prolia wouldn’t work for me and I would have to take Evenity. I decided to try HRT and OsteoStrong first. I’ll let you know if I get good results.

Thanks. Anxious to hear. I can't do HRT because of my breast cancer history.

This happened to me after a huge weight loss over the course of just two months (due to health issue, not dieting). I was not on any medication and I was post menopause. Your decision to get another DEXA sounds like a good one and I hope you get positive news.

Interesting that your doctor said Prolia wouldn't work for you. May I ask what your T-score is and why your doctor doesn't think it will work for you? I am asking because my numbers dropped 5% in my spine to an average T-score of -3.1 (my hips are are -2.5). My doctor is recommending Prolia, but after hearing other people's stories on this website I have decided to get a consultation with Dr. McCormick before starting Prolia.

I am very interested in HRT as a stop gap solution. May I ask your age and your number of years since menopause. I am 64 years old and been in menopause for about 15 years. I've been listening to a lot of podcasts on HRT, offered by Peter Attia on The Drive. It sounds like many doctors won't prescribe HRT for women my age/length of menopause.

Interesting about HRT. Some have to be careful because of the breast issues. I am your age and length of time since menopause and I am also considering it. I had a consult with Dr Mc Cormick and he agrees with me and said I can do this and tymlos together but start tymlos first and then on a few months add hormones.
I’ll see if I can find that info you listened to.

The Drive by Peter Attia #253 Hormone replacement therapy and the Women's Health Initiative: re-examining the results, the link to breast cancer, and weighing the risk vs reward of HRT. I'm going to search his podcasts for another one on HRT as well. If you find anything useful, let me know!!!!!
