Bowel urgency: Any suggestions?

Posted by lwbarker @lwbarker, Mar 3, 2023

I am 77 and have had bowel urgency for about 12 years. Mostly in the mornings, sometimes loose, sometimes firm, usually two to three BMs. Have had embarrassing incidents of no control when away from home. Recently GI doc recommended fiber supplement, pelvic floor strengthening and Bentyl (dicyclomine) daily. Fiber seems to help consistency. I take Bentyl if going out in the morning. I watch what I eat and drink. Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

My doctor told me to take Metamucil on a regular basis. I prefer the pills. So far they have helped me considerably. After only one episode I took another. I still stay away from fried foods and sour cream as I don’t want to tempt the fates.

A doctor told me to take Pepto Bismol 2x a day. That seemed to work. I do take a Metamucil pill every morning. It seems to have calmed things down. I still have diverticulitis and a fistula I'm told but not told what to do for it. So, I researched Online and found out lots of information. I now cook everything and then put it in a blender and eat my food as soup. So far, the pain has subsided. But, I'm so hungry. I did put a slice of white bread in the 'soup' to add to it's enjoyability. So far, so good. Will this ever go away?

Your comments about bowel urgency are very interesting to me because the same kind of thing has been happening to me and I thought it was/is gastric dumping syndrome. Incidents of urgency/diarrhea four days in a row on a recent road trip and additional incidents after returning home prompted me to get an appointment with a gastroenterologist (it's so frustrating when physicians are scheduling a month or more out). Identifying the trigger(s) for these incidents is a challenge.

Yes, thanks. I also read that it relaxes the gastric muscles so as to prevent intestinal “spasms,” which cause the urgency. It does work, I just resist being on a medication constantly that is also anticholinergic. There is research about those, including diphenhydramine, that suggests they can cause cognitive issues. My doc says not to worry.

I know this post is old, but just in case you’re still monitoring, I am wondering If you started Bentyl and what it did for you? I already have a stack of meds my doctor tells me “not to worry about”, but have had some pretty grizzly side effects, so I do worry! I’m afraid to start another one and wonder if you have any info to share. Thanks!

I still do take 10 mg Bentyl (generic -dicyclomine) when I am going away from my house before around 9:30 AM. So not frequently since I am retired. It seems to quell bowel urgency after about 45 minutes to an hour. The side effects for me are mild…initially some imbalance, a little lightheadedness, but I can still walk and think fine.
It wears off after about 6 hours, may need another dose, if you need more help later.
Hope this helps.

I have IBS – C and feel like most of the people that take Dicyclomine have IBS – D. Does it work on stomach pain and on spasms for either or does it really target those with diarrhea more than constipation? Thank you for your response. Very helpful!

I wonder if anyone had had Axionic for bowel urgency? My understanding, and this is a rather simplistic - is that they implant a Neuomodulator in your buttocks with leads that go to the sacral nerve. It is supposed to stimulate the nerves that communicate between the brain, bladder, and bowel. My urogynocologist performs these procedures. It is used for bladder control and bowel control both.
