Breathing stops after drinking coffee

Posted by baguette @baguette, May 28, 2023

My friend has experienced her breathing stop three times briefly when drinking coffee. She had an endoscopy but the doctor said she didn't have an esophagus issue. She went for a barium swallow, and the technician said she did have an esophageal issue but he couldn't diagnose. She will see an ENT in August and an allergist but in the meantime, has anyone else had this experience? If so, do you know what caused it? Thanks!

...sorry have not had this experience but curious so looked it up on Internet and seems possibly could be an allergic reaction? if it was/is then by time waits for tests, the problem has gone? that must have been very scary! J.

Give up coffee, maybe try green tea.

If it is a allergic reaction to coffee, everytime you drink it the reaction will get worse until you experience full blown Anaphalaxis (sp??) and you don't want that. It could kill you. Have you ever had a problem with just plain coffee without any flavorings, sugars or creams? If you are adding anything to your black coffee, that might be the problem.

I can't answer your questions because I was posting for a friend and I don't have all the details. I have relayed everyone's comments to her.

Hi Baguette,
I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's breathing problem after drinking coffee. That must be terrible! But with today's coffee, I'm not surprised. They are making coffee so bitter and strong these days! Folgers definitely does not taste like it used to. My husband loves coffee and he couldn't drink the strong ones they have now. We found a brand that is very mild. It is New England Coffee. It's at this website: https://www.newenglandcoffee.com/ . The "Doughnut Shop" blend is the mildest blend that they have. My husband loves this coffee and he can drink it all day with no problem. Possibly, your friend could drink this coffee with no terrible side effects.

Another consideration your friend might be having is menopause. When I went through menopause, I couldn't drink coffee at all and still can't and I'm now 77.

I hope things work out for your friend.
