Bowel urgency: Any suggestions?
I am 77 and have had bowel urgency for about 12 years. Mostly in the mornings, sometimes loose, sometimes firm, usually two to three BMs. Have had embarrassing incidents of no control when away from home. Recently GI doc recommended fiber supplement, pelvic floor strengthening and Bentyl (dicyclomine) daily. Fiber seems to help consistency. I take Bentyl if going out in the morning. I watch what I eat and drink. Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

I recently discovered this forum and I am very grateful. I have symptoms of what my GI doctor feels may be IBS-D but I am in the process of getting other things ruled out. The symptoms began after a great deal of loss and stress in my life. So far, I have had a colonoscopy with several biopsies. The biopsies were looking for microscopic colitis and they were negative. The colon visually appeared normal. Many stool cultures were done which were negative. I am waiting for results on a recent MRI enterography to see if there is a problem in the small bowel such as Crohns disease. I had a blood test for Celiac which was negative.
The GI doctor advised to eliminate all dairy products and gluten. This is hard and I have not done this 100%.
I'm supposed to get a SIBO and Fructan test next month. Treatment has been dicyclomine and immodium which I have not taken. I found a non-medicine treatment called NERVA. It is a hypnotherapy app created by a psychologist that specializes in the brain-gut connection. I just started the program so I think it is too early to tell if this will help. Watching what I eat has helped a little. Stress reduction helps as well. Thank you all for sharing your comments. It has been very helpful.
You can get Imodium/Loperamide Anti-Diarrheal at Costco for .89cents for a box of 24 sealed caplets!!! In their pharmacy.
This stuff puts the brakes on poop 💩 urgency/volcanoes ASAP. IM 70 & have used it for 3 years along with Meta Mucil. I carry an immodium with me daily…it acts real fast but I only need it every 3 days or so.
Sounds like you are doing all the right trials to see what works and what doesn’t, what is at wirk in your individual system.
Psyllium husk caplets(or powder) did help my morning looseness, but not 100%. Motion seems to affect my urgency, so I do take a dicyclomine and or Imodium before a morning trip of even 2-3 hours or where I am not likely to easily find a bathroom (like a morning walk. I usually exercise in the late afternoon.) . Coffee affects me, so I only drink it if I’m close to home. I was advised to do pelvic floor exercises, which I am not regular about but should be.
I am learning that it’s a management situation along with some helpful drugs. And I’m still learning. I am 77 years old. Keep trying different regimens to find what works for YOU. And be prepared when away from home.
This website is a great comfort and help.
Thank you......this is very good to know. I have been reluctant to take immodium as I thought it would cause constipation. Good to know that it acts quickly. Taking it every 3 days or so might be the answer to avoiding constipation. Sounds like Costco is a good place to purchase these!

Does anyone have a recommendation for irritation caused by loose bowel movements?I use Calmoseptine moisture barrier, and I use a Toto Washlet, but my tush gets very irritated .
After 2 bowel resections over 50 years, my frequency (10+ times a day) and frequency was interfering with my quality of life. I didn't want to go out for fear of an accident. My new GI gave me colesevalem. It's a cholesterol medication that causes constipation- perfect for me with chronic diarrhea. Within 3 days, I had my life back. I suffered for years and I went t several doctors none of them suggested this. Not many GI doctors think of this as it is a cholesterol med- but it works! You can take up to 6 pills a day. You start with 2 a day and gradually build up. 4 a day is my magic number! Don't suffer- find the right doctor!!!!!
My GI agave me cholystramine when I was struggling with bowel frequency and urgency as I was going through chemotherapy. He didn’t want me to take Imodium
I've been to three doctors so far, and not one has come up with a solution. I was told to live with it. Horrible doctors.
My doctor told me to take Metamucil on a regular basis. I prefer the pills. So far they have helped me considerably. After only one episode I took another. I still stay away from fried foods and sour cream as I don’t want to tempt the fates.
