Fluoroquinolone toxicity

Posted by cbsolomon @cbsolomon, Sep 11, 2021

Did anyone on this forum take cipro levaquin or avelox around the time their neuropathy began. If so, you probably suffered an adverse reaction to the drug. These fluoroquinolone antibiotics are well know for causing bad neuropathies, tendon damage and psychiatric issues. Check your medical records.

Dr Adrian Hohenwarter in Palmyra PA. He has a website that you can check out. He’s well aware of fluoroquinolone toxicity, the damage it does and the denial/ignorance of most providers. He can’t “fix” it but he can help your body do the best it can to repair. Best of luck.

Thank you! I called his office but he can't see me until October. I may have found a chiropractor in Scranton who can help.

I am relatively new to this web site, on about two weeks, still working my way thru various subjects and this caught my attention. I was given a series of Cipro, Avelox, Augmentin over a period of several years due to diverticulitis and finally got that resolved. Noticed some numbness in toes, side of feet. I had been on Dilantin for 35 years, neuro doc figured that could be cause. Several years later, round 2010, ended up in hospital for 4 days due to serious sinus infection which was MRSA. Even today, no idea how I got that. Doctors gave me various antibiotics with no sucess, once I started to look like Homer Simpson, doc finally ended up giving me vancomycin which I believe is what they refer to as the last line of defense. The doc had no other choice. It obviously worked. I believe around 2013, FDA put out warning about vancomycin could possibly cause neuropathy. Hmmm. After the hospitalization, I did develop sensory neuropathy and later, motor neuropathy. My diagnosis by Mayo is idiopathic axonal sensorimotor PN. My balance is horrible. So, I have to scratch my head and wonder a little.
Could antibiotics cause all of this?? Sometimes sharing info can be helpful to many.

I was prescribed ciprofloxacin for UTI by a doctor in June 2017 and got neuropathy overnight.
Unfortunately I didn't know the culprit at the time. Had I known I would have atleast discontinued the course in the middle. Although I was diagnosed one year later for small fiber neuropathy with no reason identified by Mayo Clinic, I am positive that Cipro is the real culprit of my suffering.

I am currently poisoned 6 years from cipro. Additionally, I was poisoned in 1990 and sick for 9 years. For whatever miracle, after 9 years it mostly went away. During that time, I went to Mayo clinic. They didn't have a clue and how to diagnose me. And it's mind-blowing that 31 years later they still can't diagnose it. It's really sad. And Mayo clinic is not alone. Virtually every doctor I see doesn't believe me and or knows nothing about the florouquinolone poisoning

My son was prescribed cipro for a UTI. He is 28 years old. He was very healthy and active. After taking 4 pills he went to the ER because he was feeling so horrible. He had chest pain, was somewhat delirious. That was in January 2023. The ER doctor in January did believe him. He is weak, has joint pain, some brain fog. The ortho doctor found out that he has some bulging discs in his back. Prior to the Cipro, he never had back pain. He has severe dry skin on his hands starting at his wrist. His knuckles are sometimes bright red. He used to work out every day, run, walk. Now if he walks two miles, he has pain in his knees and other joints.

No one wants to believe him. I am looking for a doctor in Georgia that treats fluoroquinolone toxicity.

No one told me! My muscles in the backs hurt so bad, and my hips I take five Tylenol in the morning and five at night because of the pain I don’t know what else to do for the pain. How long does it take for this to get out of your system?

Hello @belkins, Welcome to Connect. I know it's difficult when you are in so much pain and can't get any relief. I wished I had some answers that would make it go away. If it were me, I would make a list of my symptoms and concerns and talk with my primary care team or doctor. Medications are a good thing to discuss with your surgeon or his team before the surgery. I've always done this prior to the few surgeries I have had - knee replacement, cataracts and hernia.

Have you tried talking with your doctor?

I am afraid that much Tylenol will ruin your liver. The maximum dosage of Tylenol for every 24 hours is 4000 mg. Please consider switching to naproxen (Aleve). Tylenol is no good for back pain anyhow. I read an article about it in THE LANCET. Take care!

By the way, I know about fluoroquinolones, particularly Levaquin. I was mistakenly advised to take Levaquin due to a supposed kidney infection, which was proved to be a wrong assumption. I took just three days of Levaquin before I came down with pain in my calves so bad that I could hardly walk for ten weeks. Finally, the reaction went away. But I have sworn never to take fluoroquinolones again.

I just spent an hour writing about my 3 1/2 year experience nightmare of Levaquin. From perfectly healthy to the extreme fit physically fit high-level professional medical speech, pathologist for 30 years, working seven days happily balanced life, married with dogs. After trying to get rid of a UTI. I was given Levaquin after day for my life ended. Neuropathy following mental changes visual changes, and all the symptoms of Sjogren’s suddenly came on I also experienced severe anhidrosis. I do not sweat. I stop driving I stopped working I stopped living I do not even go out. My wife has taken care of me for the last 3 1/2 years since this happened I had to quit my fantastic profession, which I enjoyed so much. Our life ended. After seeing several doctors and 3 1/2 years worth of searching. Mostly ignored and neglected, and frankly did not believe me. Put me in the mental category started me on antidepressant antipsychotic drugs. It destroyed my life Basically bedbound. I wrote all the details I could think of and it never excepted my comment. It’s just circled.
