Forteo or Evenity - which to take?

Posted by bellagila @bellagila, Apr 29, 2023

I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis last year and am still unsure about whether to take Forteo or Evenity. I fractured my pelvis from a fall several years ago. I consulted with 3 bone experts - two suggested Forteo and one suggested Evenity. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts and experiences with both success and side effects from these medications. Thank you so much!

I'm interested in Tymlos but Medicare doesn't cover it and my prescription co=pay would be about $850 a month. I don't qualify for a discount.

They have a financial assistance program. Call Together with Tymlos (on the website). Also, do you have a supplementary drug plan?

@gullfcoastwoman it is not a discount program. If your income is eligible you get Tymlos for free, for 18 months.

I have Part D with BCBS. I was told it would be $1500 . It was the first month . Second month 1100. Third month $454. Last two months $ 234. It will continue at $234 or less until January 1st. If you have other prescriptions and reach the catastrophic level, you will have a zero copay. I went from being bummed about paying $1500 to relief about paying $234. I have never taken many prescriptions, but my luck ran out.

I did 11 months of Evenity and stopped before last injections due to muscle/joint pain. I had 49% increase in spine and 4% in hip and 14%. It’s been two months since last injections and aches/joint pain are improving. I had no joint pain/muscle aches prior to Evenity but spine results were worth it I think? I’m on Fosamax weekly now. I decided not to do Reclast as an injection that lasts a year was worrisome after the Evenity adverse effects. I had put off doing anything for several years but my spine just kept getting worse. It’s a big decision as I prefer anything natural if possible. Hope this helps!

I started Evenity this month. I am concerned about comments that prior use of fosamax makes Evenity less effective. After first injections I got a few days of fairly intense joint/muscle pain but I tried to just keep moving. Now on day 5 the pain seems to be leaving so I am hoping that it will stay this way. With heat, ice and keep moving I can manage on the short term. Hoping it isn't a monthly occurrence though! Did anyone have a lesser dose? I only weigh 106 and am petite.

I asked about getting only one of the two syringes for the first dose to see how well I tolerated it. That was denied as it would be off-label. Patients are secondary to labels. With Tymlos and Reclast, one can ramp up. Or, as one physician said, I could always say stop after the injection of the first syringe full.

Many years ago I took Forteo for two years. It did not work the way it was expected to work. Very disappointing after injecting myself every single day for two years. Hence I’ve recently had a complex hip replacement due to osteoporosis. Also at that time there was a lot of talk about these drugs causing jaw necrosis which scared me so much that I decided not to take any more drugs for osteoporosis. I had seen an orthopedic surgeon at HSS, hospital for special surgery. It’s the #1 hospital in the country for orthopedics. So I guess not all drugs work well for all people but that was my experience.

@linnie48 Tymlos and Forteo do not cause jaw necrosis. So sorry Forteo didn't work for you!
