Should I have knee replacement with neuropathy?

Posted by susiesprue @susiesprue, May 6, 2023

I have idiopathic neuropathy, in my feet and legs, stiff, tingling, burning cramping at night, the usual, and I have painful arthritic knees. Hyluronic acid did not work, considering prp therapy. Has anyone been successful in knee replacement as a diagnosed neuropathy patient? If not suggested, what would one do?

Well, how about that? I didn't finish the response. I went to Munsinger Gardens for the first time this year to walk the river. Such is the way my mind scrambles with cognitive decline.

Anyway.....in August of 2021, I had a TKR on my right leg. I was diagnosed with SFN (small fiber neuropathy) in 2013. Other than taking a look at all of the medications with my surgeon to make sure none were unwelcome because of the SFN, the surgery went well and the recovery was right next to perfect. He did permit the use of medical cannabis both pre and post-surgery.
Don't forget the need for ice and elevation several times a day. That seems to help everything.

May you be safe, protected and free of inner and outer harm.

I had rods put into my right knee. My neuropathy got worse. I’m 2 years past surgery and still have very bad pain around that knee that Will not get any better. I wouldn’t bother doing it again even though I definitely need it in my left knee as I have hyperextension and now that leg is an inch shorter than the other. It wasn't shorter before the rods in the right. I wear a lift on the left.

@cls1 Sorry to hear about your unfortunate situation. Both of my knees are bone on bone, I saw the X-rays myself and two different orthopedic surgeons will not do replacement on me because of my occasional trip and fall which, in some cases, I land on my knee(s). All due to sensory motor PN. I get cortisone shots every 90 days which I'm not happy about but with gel every 6 months, I'm getting around and about. I tend to walk more after cortisone shots, get the exercise in when I can. I'm told the knee issues are not causing my neuropathy in my feet but in my opinion, the jury is still out. When my knee pain intensifies, the numbness increases. Hmmm. No connection?? Bottom line, lots of pain between day 60 until 90 until next shot.

I went through the cortisone shots in my knees for years! They don’t work for too long though. I’m surprised they won’t do surgery because of trip and fall. You would think that would be a good reason to do it! I’d it hyperextension that causes you to fall? That’s why I needed the rods- to stop the falling.

@cls1 - I do get about 8 weeks of relief from cortisone. Both orthopedic docs said that there is too much risk with knee replacement in my case. I also have drop foot but wear orthotics which help but tend to trip at times going up steps, foot doesn't clear the step and land on knee. It involves weighing out the danger of bone damage if I were to fall with a replacement vs. keeping me the best they can pain free. In my case, it's a balancing act.

Sorry to her that. I take hydrocodone 10 4-5 times a day for pain and still get the cortisone shots. I feel like a tenth of my old self.

@cls1 - I take 2 - 650 mg Tylenol arthritis, one at 7AM and one 5PM and one Advil 500 mg at 10AM and a second one at 8PM. Been doing this for 4 years and I'm holding OK on this regiment. As my cortisone shots wear off after 8 weeks, the last 4 weeks I add 1 extra Advil at about 3PM. Took me a while to find the right combination and when.
