Just Diagnosed with Osteoporosis- Where to Start
I was very shocked at the diagnosis I received yesterday with a t-score of -5.4 on my left femeral neck. I hadn’t had a bone density test in 14 years and my doctor ordered it after my 4th lumpectomy (in a 20 year period) to see if I can take Aramatase Inhibitors. Pretty sure that won’t be an option at this point. I wish I would have been more proactive and had the bone density test done more regularly. I am an active 64 year old, get lots of exercise and eat very healthy. I feel like I will now go down the rabbit hole of Dr’s, prescriptions, eat this not that, and never really know why this is happening. Researching on seeing a rheumatologist or endocrinologist but that is conflicting as well. Some say caffeine is bad, others say it builds bones. Everything I’ve read in the last 24 hours seems to have completely different opinions. I guess I honestly don’t know where to start on this journey. I’ve read about Yoga, alkaline diet, medications, calcium. It feels overwhelming but I worry if I don’t do something right away, this bone loss will continue. This community has been really helpful already by my reading the posts. Thank you all for sharing information and experiences.

@coldia what are your other scores? My femoral neck is always much worse and my report stated it was not reliable for measuring change- whatever that means!
I did 5 years of an aromatase inhibitor with severe osteoporosis and then did Tymlos. I was unable to take Reclast per my doc. But most people take Reclast with the aromatase inhibitor and that can help bones and may help with cancer.
Of course tamoxifen is also an option. Just wanted you to know that some of us with osteopororis still take an AI, usually with Reclast.
Thank you for your reply. That is encouraging to read what you said. I just thought they would say no to the AI’s. I haven’t heard from my oncologist yet, but am anxious to see his plan. The report has so many different numbers but the Z number was in the high ones for my L spine which was good. I really appreciate your message, thank you!
As a person who seldom lets details get in her way, my I suggest that you look at publish date. When it comes to technical issues, I seldom pay attention to any information that is more than 5 years old.
@coldia you want to look at the T scores. The further down they are from -2.5 the worse your osteoporosis is.
By the way, if I didn't write it before, although my bones were not treated during cancer treatment, and then during COVID (had fractures 2021), the Tymlos I am finishing brought my DEA scores back to well before cancer treatment levels.
The first thing the Dr's told me was to increase my calcium to 1500mg and vit D.to 5000iu.
They started me on Evenity once a month, but it was too expensive so they have switched me to Prolia every 6 mos. Weight bearing exercises help build bones also.
That is a lot of calcium! Are you taking that much as a supplement or are you getting most of it from food? Better from food. I take 800mg because I cannot eat dairy. Is you Vitamin D level low? That is also a high dose of D.
Evenity and Prolia are different kinds of meds. Evenity builds bones and also, at some point, affects turnover. Prolia addresses turnover. Did you talk with Amgen, the manufacturer of both, about financial assistance?
You will have to go on Reclast when you are done with Prolia to avoid rebound loss of density.
Good luck with it!
There is no assistance for Evenity.
Yes when my bone density came back my adjustment for calcium and D was adjusted. (I use a patch)
After Medicare plan A&B took care of their portion of 80%, my payment would be over $300 a month for every month. I could never afford that.
Evenity does have some assistance. They don't have a program but use foundation fund, when available- they told me. I read in McCormick's new book that the most bone-building with Evenity may happen in the first 4 months so I wonder if you could swing that-? I am pursuing that myself after Tymlos.
