@mcdora

I had anterior approach 3 years ago. I am now experiencing a loosening of the stem. a little pain but more instability when i first get up in morning. I had a bone scan which confirms minor loosening or beginning loosening. Doctor suggests stem replacement, but I am afraid and said no. He has scheduled me to return in 4 months to evaluate. Don't know what to do.

Hi @mcdora - first, welcome to Connect! Lots of great people here who are caring and willing to share experience. I know this must be scary and frustrating since the doctor is recommending more surgery. When you talk about having an anterior approach, is this a hip replacement? I've only had a knee replacement and I don't have any experience with stem replacement. I'm going to tag a few people who may be able to help and also hope that others may join in with their experience and/or advice. @bonniedeely, @sunshine1124, and @scottb32. Wishing you a great outcome.

@mcdora It’s never easy to choose elective surgery unless you are truly miserable and in intolerable pain. I think in your case you have to decide if the pain and instability is bad enough to make surgery an option that you want to choose. I think choosing surgery is also easier when you are very confident and comfortable with the surgeon.
Four months gives you a good amount of time to make a decision.
