My 20 year old daughter has armpit pain that makes her whole arm ache

Posted by chriskay @chriskay, May 7, 2023

So my 20 year old healthy 100 lb daughter is complaining about pain near her armpit. It comes and goes, pretty much happens every month. When this happens she takes ibuprofen and uses a heating pad but it doesn’t really help. Her whole arm aches and feels heavy. Her primary doctor thinks it’s normal. She felt the area, no other tests blood or otherwise. Did anyone ever experience this?

I was browsing around and reading the different comments, I always find the information I'm getting very interesting and sometimes helpful. I just want to comment on what you said about your daughter having terrible pain in her underarm and it brought back memory... I'm much older than your daughter but I can tell you one thing for sure, when I was her age I had this same problem and it would come around about the time I was due for my period. I could feel a very tender spot under my are but not any lumps or bumps although we have many glands and lymph nodes in there. I would have this pain for about 3-4 days and it would go away, my usual treatment was regular pain medication like Tylenol, we didn't have Advil or drugs like this. I was told it's glandular and not uncommon, nothing to worry about, it always stopped after my period was done. I'm not sure if this is the same thing your daughter is having but it sounds so similar that I had to let you know. I was also told not to think it was something more serious and they were right even so long ago because nothing came of it and eventually it went away as I grew out of my twenties. As always when in doubt check it out and that's just common sense that you already know as a mom, good luck.

@chriskay, here's an article that lists quite a comprehensive list of possible causes of armpit pain:

I think @frouke might be onto something with this being menstrual period-related since she experiences the pain monthly. Does the pain go away, only to return with her next period?

Hi, read your post. Consider trying something that is ancient. Warm Castor Oil packs. Edgar Cayce( his Books are very interesting... he wasn't a quack). Hw used Castor oil treatments for a variety of conditions. Castor oil is " not toxic and draws out pathogens/bacteria that should not be in your body that have potential to cause pain, inflammation and list goes on. There is tons of info for the use of non toxic remedies such as Castor oil.
This is a natural treatment which cause no harm. Look up castor oil treatment on you tube and internet. There is a multitude of conditions castor oil is used for these days and have been used for hundreds of years.. People did not have drs and or run to CVS because they were not available. Sadly doctors are all over the place with a diagnosis. IF they cannot figure it out you will just be referred to another doctor. Has your daughter been checked for Lyme's disease? No deodorant to be used either. There can be alergeries that may be present and not be aware of. All these things mentioned can be addressed. As my grandmother used to say. In years past people did not have drs or cvs. They found ways to cure themselves especially the Native American Indians. Hot warm wet pads under arm with the castor oil may draw out what ever is not draining under her arm pits. A small round water bottle bag.. is useful too.
Castor oil & Manuka honey are also used for neuropathy with. people who have diabetes. Hope some of this helps. I understand how frustrating it is when we don't have a proper diagnosis. Please keep us updated.

Thank you...we will look into castor oil. I'm all about trying everything or anything. Especially if it's natural. This is a reoccurring inflammation and I want her to document every month when it's occurring. I'm thinking that it's associated with her menstrual cycle.

My daughter had these issues when younger also at the same age . She complained a lot , something with lymph as I remember , she freaked out a bit , yet this disappeared . As years went on . Doctors said take some anti inflammatory . We never did a biopsy .yet they wanted to …… This can be a woman maturing . I have no idea . Keep an eye on her, now my daughter being the ripe age of 33 wants to have a child . Wellllll She has developed some type of thyroid issue over a year now , that needs to be addressed . She is on medication . I try to stay out of it , as she is married now … and she can take care of herself . I will come back to you what the diagnosis is exactly . I know with woman thyroid can regulate a lot of these issues , even though it is extremely possible one thing has nothing to do with the other in my daughters case .. yet I do wonder years later, and feel a bit guilty for not being more thorough 12 plus years ago with more examinations .. …… . .. get blood work and extensive . Just giving you my situation which may have nothing at all to do with your precious child . God Bless

Chris Kay . Doctors work for us … for many years I have always lead them . With my parents and folks I ask and speak and many I trust some i do not feel comfortable with so I go to another …. . I do understand they are not gods . Obviously I am not shy .. if I did not push doctors quickly with my right thigh mass who knows , as I said earlier I thought I had a blood clot . Take charge with children as I do with my 10 year old boy and his doctors … I rather know then not know … maybe this is just my nature … .. . Believe me I don’t like hanging out at doctors office either .. give me an appt .. I will not sit for 30 -60
Minutes or I leave quickly …..take charge , see what is causing this . Btw it is not normal. I become very pro active with my approach towards doctors ..

Thank you for your insight. We both go to the same Primary Doctor and she assured my daughter this is nothing. This made her feel better until the next month her whole arm ached and felt heavy. Who knows if it’s really that bad or if she’s just being dramatic. It does come and go at least. Our primary is good with myself & daughter pursuing additional tests or specialists she will pretty much do whatever I ask, even if it ends up to be nothing and a waste of money. I would rather be proactive. I know we have to be our own CEO of our bodies.

Please if you are able to have a chance to share your experience using the castor oil treatment would really appreciate it. It also help with cramping and sciatica with other individuals. warm heating pad is necessary to use with a piece of flannel material or material that will protect skin from too much heat from heating pad while still keeping warm not excessive hot. I turn my settings on low and if it gets to hot, just turn it off and turn it on again. Or a hot water bottle can also be used which may be more convenient for many people. Best of luck
