Description
The Prostate Cancer Support Group is an in-person and virtual group for Mayo Clinic patients and their caregivers. The group meets monthly on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from noon to 1:30 pm CT.
Each month guest speakers from the Mayo Clinic oncology team provide education on specific topics related to prostate cancer. Following the presentation and Q & A time, members share information and experiences.
Our guest for May 10:
Dr. Edward Laskowski, a sports medicine physician at Mayo, has been a team physician for the USA Olympics team and has been on the USA President’s Council for Fitness. Dr. Laskowski is an advocate for exercise as medicine and has given a multitude of lectures across the globe about the topic. He will be sharing his recommendations for exercise for prostate cancer patients.
In-person space is limited, but all are welcome to participate via Zoom.

If there is any value to these sessions they should be available for review if you missed them. Any Zoom is recorded as a matter of course. They would simply need to be posted
thank you. I hope the administrator will post them.
It helps to understand a bit about communications and learning.
We need every bit of information we can garner.
Five weeks after prostatectomy along with a hernia repair and I am still having urine leakage incontinence. Urologist says it will take time but I’m looking for more positive information on how long time is. I will pull ups in augmented with wash clause and saturate the wash clause every two hours while staying away from liquids. Any helpful information or encouragement would be useful. Thank you for your time and courtesy.
My husband had a robotic prostatectomy 5 months ago, at age 70, and he is just achieving minimal leakage, so, as discouraging as it may seem, it sounds pretty normal.
A few suggestions:
Depends makes pads called Guards. They fit in your underwear. At your stage, Steve was using 4 -6 pads a day and a pull up at night. Now he has minimal leakage at night and 2 pads during the day.
DON’T restrict liquids. Drink 1,500-2000 ml a day, mostly water. Concentrated urine is more irritating and causes leaking.
Do Kegals . We were fortunate to have a pelvic floor physio therapist who helped Steve with various exercise to help strengthen his pelvic floor.
We recommend these 2 books:
They took my Prostate by JPMac. It is funny, helpful and he tells it like it is!
Prostate Recovery Map. Men’s Action Plan by Craig Allingham. This book is by an Australian physiotherapist and is excellent, especially if you don’t have access to a therapist. Follow what he tells you and you will improve. It takes work but you can make yourself better.
Write again and we will be there for you. It is not an easy time in your life, but you will improve.
