Forteo or Evenity - which to take?

Posted by bellagila @bellagila, Apr 29, 2023

I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis last year and am still unsure about whether to take Forteo or Evenity. I fractured my pelvis from a fall several years ago. I consulted with 3 bone experts - two suggested Forteo and one suggested Evenity. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts and experiences with both success and side effects from these medications. Thank you so much!

A 49% increase is incredible @lauratys. My doc found it hard to believe a 19% increase. Wow!

I did 11 months of Evenity and stopped before last injections due to muscle/joint pain. I had 49% increase in spine and 4% in hip and 14%. It’s been two months since last injections and aches/joint pain are improving. I had no joint pain/muscle aches prior to Evenity but spine results were worth it I think? I’m on Fosamax weekly now. I decided not to do Reclast as an injection that lasts a year was worrisome after the Evenity adverse effects. I had put off doing anything for several years but my spine just kept getting worse. It’s a big decision as I prefer anything natural if possible. Hope this helps!

I did 9 months of Evenity then stopped for increasing joint pain with each dose from #5 onward. I followed up with Reclast which had never bothered me before but unfortunately was not the case now. The joint pain/stiffness has been doing a slow walk through my hands, both now. Maybe my toes. It's not debilitating but definitely annoying. It's better as the day goes on. But I figure I've got a year maybe more of this according to what I have read.
I won't get a dexa until January.
I took Forteo about 14 years ago and went from a -4.8 to 4 in my spine. I have been seeing a different doc and their machine has me at a -3.6. So different machine can give different results. Regardless, I did have a density increase and no adverse reactions.

Thanks for sharing this information. I noticed the joint pain/muscle spasms and pain at around 6 months but kept trying. It is good for me to know that I'm not the only one as sometimes I thought I was just getting a little too aware of how I was feeling/aching but it was real! Best to you!

Has anyone gone from a full course of Forteo (1-2) years and then on to Evenity?
Interesting that none of my doctors mentioned Tymlos - which I will ask about.
Does Forteo cause a lot of side effects? Does it build bone in both the spine and hip?
Does Evenity build bone in both the spine and hip?
I am praying for peace in my ultimate decision. I was diagnosed a year ago and still haven't moved forward.
Thank you all for your thoughts and patience!

Ortho surgeon wanting me on Forteo so very interested also in anyone else's experience with it.

Forteo and Tymlos are not exactly the same but both work in very similar ways using the parathyroid pathway. Depending on how you tolerate these meds, they are essentially interchangeable at least in terms of how they were offered to me. Since I am sensitive to meds the adjustable dose of Tymlos was key for me.

I did Tymlos so that I could follow with Evenity but have found out my doc isn't comfortable with that. Evenity is both a bone builder and an anti-resorptive so pretty potent and I might have chosen that instead had I known my doc wouldn't prescribe after Tymlos. I am seeking a second opinion and meeting with Keith McCormick as well (got his new book).

I did 4 months of Forteo with no side effects. I had some bone improvement with the Forteo. Would have stayed on it but could not afford it. Now on Tymlos with no problems. Going on Evenity later this month.

I am on Tymlos and both doctors - endocrinologist and rheumatologist - insist that I follow with Evenity. Also, look at Dr. Lani Simpson's website. I read her book - Bone Health - years ago and I have consulted with her about treatment.

I did a masterclass last year with Dr. Simpson and her patient did Evenity after Tymlos. That is where I got the idea in the first place. My doc is immoveable. It will be hard to get in with anyone else before my Tymlos runs out. If anyone knows a doc in MA, PM me!

I used Forteo in the past . You give yourself shot everyday 1 x a day . It’s not bad. I didn’t have any side affects I used for about 14 months . Was suppose to be put on something after . Reabsorbtion med . Never was . Whatever you do . Make sure you use something after . I never was . Dr s failed me . Now I see an endocrinologist . For me his 1 st choice was Evinity . You go in 1 x a month . And get an injection . I have not had any side affects from that . I’m going on injection number 5 . I was told after a yr . I will need Prolia No exceptions . Your bone density will drop really fast . That’s what I was told .
