I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis six years ago. I had IBS all my life, and was constipated most of the time. During the last six years I’ve been on budesonide pretty much all the time because the diarrhea would never go away. I always had much pain and cramping with it. Recently I found out that my colon is full of you know what! I had a lot of pain a few weeks ago and went to the hospital and they did a CT scan, after I had had an extremely bad few days of gushing diarrhea. Shocked to see that my colon was full! My G.I. doctor decided I should try doing a colonoscopy clean out. I went through the awful drinking of all that liquid which I mostly threw up. And it seemed as though it went through the motions, got down to the bile yellow that comes out at the end. But just for giggles we decided to get an x-ray and see if I was actually cleaned out. Lo and behold I was not, it said that my bowel was still full of moderate to large stool. For several years (doc suggested) I take eight loperamide a day trying to stop the diarrhea. I quit taking that a few weeks ago but I still can’t get that stool out of my body. I am at a loss as to what to do next. My G.I. doctor doesn’t seem to have an answer either. Has anyone else had this issue?

Thanks! I’ll let you know if I find something that works. Budesonide has worked at times but I should have gone into remission at least ONCE in 6 years..

To the person who posted that charcoal pills stopped diarrhea, a thousand thanks.
I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis. I took Budesonide for a little over two months, and it was wonderful. After about a month after stopping, I started getting diarrhea and cramping again. After two months the diarrhea was every day. The Imodium never helped. After seeing the post, I added two charcoal pills before meals and no more diarrhea. Thanks for posting.

CVS sells them, Walgreens and Amazon also. I’m weaning off the Imodium and anxious to see if the charcoal will work by itself. I’ll post the results.
I hope they work for you.

Hi..thanks for your reply..watch the Imodium..I had lots of side effects from the high dose the doctor told me to take. I was way overdosed on all the meds they had me on which included the Imodium, Lialda and the last one was Busesonide which was awful. I think these drugs have such powerful side effects they keep you sick. I am now off all the drugs and am now having lab work to see the damage they all did. I sure hope you continue to feel better each day. What is the charcoal used for ? I have never heard of that?
Thanks Kitty2

The charcoal works like Imodium. It stops diarrhea. Side effects are black stools and constipation. It has been used to combat poison and people have used it for hangover cures. It binds foods. I’m having normal but black stools.

To all with microscopic colitis please be patient. I had this experience and Busesonide. It truly is the answer. It works differently on different people. You need to take two or three every morning for at least two weeks or maybe more. Then take it for a month then slowly taper off if having success. Problem is the constipation side affect needs citrucel to counter react. If you play with the dosage for a month or so then it heals the colon. If watery stools are there in the night then in the morning take the Busesonide. More than one. Do that until stools are firmer. As soon as constipation starts take less and start citrucel. It eventually heals. But it does take patience and persistence. I now take citrucel daily and it helps a lot.

After more than 25 years of dealing with microscopic colitis, I have learned to take Citrucel each morning, avoid lots of foods (the older I get, the more foods I avoid -- I'm 77), keep Imodium handy at all times, and I've developed pancreatitis and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. I must take Creon, which costs me $250 a month (my insurance company pays over $1000 a month indefinitely! (I quit smoking 50 years ago and have never been a heavy drinker, btw. )

Amen. But I would let my doc play with dosage of Budesonide. It was a wonder drug for me

This was my Budesonide regime
9 mg/day for 8 weeks, and then
6 mg for 2 weeks, then
3 mg for 2 weeks, then
off the medication
