My Mom recently diagnosed with DCIS

Question for you and your mom, are they doing surgical biopsy or lumpectomy. Once they have a biopsy that is positive, not sure why they are doing more biopsies unless it is an additional spot. All my biopsies were done in radiology dept via ultrasound or MRI. Once biopsy confirmed, a surgical lumpectomy was done to remove.

It is important that they take all and have clear margins. If they discuss surgery again, ask surgeon if there is a way to check margins during surgery so can make sure get it all. When I had my lumpectomy, they checked margins while I was still in surgery.

Hi your mother’s situation sounds like mine I’m afewyears older with other medical issues I just had successful lumpectomy and reconstruction Expecting to hear next steps based on tumor biopsy but at this point they say radiation and AI

Sounds exactly like my situation. For me, I have decided not to have radiation or the aromatase inhibitor. I already have Afib, diabetes, fibromyalgia....so the side effects would really affect my quality of life. I will have mammograms every 6 months and wait and see. I know the decision making process is difficult, and you need to do what is best for you. I wish you the best.

Just diagnosed with DCIS. Had lumpectomy and biopsy shows they got all the tissue affected. Now being told I need radiation and hormone therapy. I’m just looking for someone who’s been through this. At first, finding lump, diagnostic mamo and ultrasound, needle biopsy no one seemed concerned. After lumpectomy and pathology results I’m being told the treatment I need. I’m just wondering if I should be concerned or just glad we found it early.

I was diagnosed in a similar fashion as you. Calcifications on screening mammogram, magnified views, biopsy with DCIS diagnosis. No one thought it would be positive, but here we are. (No lump and area was very small--6mm x 4mm) Had lumpectomy surgery about 5 weeks after diagnosis. At age 61, though my risk of recurrence is low, (there are formulas that your care team can run that can give you risk of return), I opted to have 5 radiation treatments and am on an Aromatase Inhibitor. I think there are many options and depending on your age and other health concerns you may have, you can make some decisions about what is best for you going forward. There is definitely the emotional whiplash of, "it's nothing, don't worry about it" to "you need surgery, radiation and medication". It took me awhile to reconcile that. For me, doing everything I can to avoid a recurrence is something I feel I want to do, but every person needs to make that call based on their own personal circumstances. Best wishes!

I was diagnosed with DCIS in late December 2022, just after turning 68. After stereotactic biopsy and lumpectomy, I opted to forego radiation. I have been taking Tamoxifen since mid February with no side effects. Tamoxifen was recommended to me because I have mild osteopenia and want to preserve my bone health.
I was very apprehensive about taking any oral meds for this, but agreed with the oncologist to give it a try, and I’m very glad I did.
You must make your own decisions about your health and quality of life. I wish you every bit of luck and good health!
Remember- there are so many worse diagnoses than DCIS. You will manage this!

I was diagnosed with DCIS in March and I am 67. I am scheduled for a lumpectomy on May 3. I guess it will be 2 weeks before I get the pathology report and treatment recommendations. I am researching the various options, I would like to avoid radiation since the tumor is right above my heart.

Relying to my own with new info . Tumor was 14 mm— bigger than they thought. Just put off meeting with oncologist for 3 weeks to get more info on tumor. I have osteoporosis, fibrotic lungs, and high blood pressure. Am looking for something other than radiation and AI hard decisions.. hopefully I’ll get more options and info

Your breast cancer is same as I HAD.
1 Lumpectomy 1st
2 Radiation Treatment 1st next: step,
3. Chemotherapy final step to destroy any tissues that may be still cancerous, Most likely you may be put on Anastrozole for blocking estrogen . You may have heard of a lot of opinions about Anastrozole side effects. I chose to take Anastrozole for 5 years and had minimal side effects. I’m very happy on my regimen I was on, it killed my cancer cells 🤞🙏🫶Hope it’s gone for good.
