Who has had Distal Pancreatectomy and regretted it?

Posted by billyfeet @billyfeet, Apr 11, 2023

I am seeking input about experiences with losing the tail of the pancreas and spleen. Has this been the right choice for you? I will be facing this procedure in a month so would like some information from folks who have lived it. Any comments are welcomed. Thanks!

Thank you so much. You all are helping ease my mind so very much.
It’s been hard having to tell our friends and explain why we will be out of touch for awhile. They have been understanding that I do not want visitors at the hospital.
I’m trying to figure out what to pack and bring with.
I have a surgery education class this Monday so I think that will help with a lot of questions as well

Thank you so much. Wow 9 hours is a long surgery. I’m glad you are doing better. I have been drinking water and resting.
Have a wonderful weekend 💜💜

In regards to your reply about what to take to hospital. A small but important one, is to bring a nice soft warm robe, as we know the "robe" the hospital they give you in lacking in comfortbility on the back half. You will need it when you start recovering and taking numerous walks in the hallway. As many things as you would do at home to occupy yourself, while you rest and recover. You got this!

Thank you for that advice. I guess hospital chic hasn’t improved much

@ahtaylor

I had a distal Pancreatectomy/splenectomy in 2017 (that followed a modified Whipple in 2015). I also had an open procedure. The incision is L shaped. I was in the hospital for 5 days at Mayo in Rochester. The recovery was easier than the Whipple. No surgical complications and a pretty typical surgery recovery course. Best wishes on your procedure!
