Is this RLS (restless leg syndrome)?

Hi! I don’t have RLS myself, but I did just pick up a tidbit recently that is fascinating.

Low iron levels in the body (as measured in the blood as a ferritin level) have been show to affect RLS. People with RLS are recommended to maintain iron (ferritin) above a certain level. So, what might be a normal level for many people might be too low for someone who has RLS.

I would say it is worth asking about your ferritin level (or getting it measured) at your next visit if you have RLS!

I have RLS and have taken medication for it for 5-6 years. I will definitely have my iron checked. I sleep terribly because of it.

Thank you Mary. You’re quite right. I had an iron infusion done last year and I had months of relief. But you’re right too, that we need more iron than the average. Sometimes the brain doesn’t absorb iron even though the rest of the body does. RLS is horrible to live with. Never a good nights sleep!
