Foot fat atrophy and hammer toes

Posted by gocy @gocy, Nov 10, 2021

The fat protecting the bones in my feet eroded. Walking with various supports as well as orthotics are of no help.
Furthermore, my hammer toes make matters worse.

I think my age is factor in this, 68, and I worry about doing surgery and getting imobile for that time, I'll loose all the muscle mass I have left. I have done some foot exercises to wake up the muscle again, would like to build some back since I think that's a big key. And time has helped some, a year ago I couldn't raise up on toes the way I can now, and I didn't work on it. Just rested I guess.
I'm going to a podiatrist this week, and I have some trepidation about it. I think they are not very helpful often, and sometimes do harm, but I don't have other options, since my toe nails are lifting and I don't' know what to do.
I will check out the Curcumin caps you mentioned.

Everyone is different but I had my foot surgery when I about four and a half years ago. I just turned 75. Since I've been doing Pilates for over 15 years, I did pretty well recovering. That doesn't mean it would be right for you! RA is a different bag of troubles, indeed.

I have a hammer toe on each foot (the middle toe) and with age it has just become worse! The fourth toe on both feet seems to be siding over to the hammer toes and burying themselves underneath the hammer toes. I can’t seem to wear any dressy shoes if there is an occasion that I have to attend. The best that I can do is open-toed sandals. I went to my podiatrist and she said that the most conservative course of action for this problem are these little rubber pads that she gave me. They attach to the hammer toe by a small ribbon and they stay in place. It’s a little uncomfortable because I am aware that they are there, but they have lifted the hammer toes and have prevented them from rubbing against the surface, which produced terrible seed corns. I also have had plantar fasciitis and I got a prescription for custom made orthotics. They have helped me so much but I think that I will be living in sneakers for the rest of my life!!! Hope that this info helps.

I am 72 and have had all ten toes corrected w titanium pins! They were all destined for being hammered and looking at my mother’s experience with having it alter her balance and her security walking, I went in and had every thing done. Fantastic! As for the fat in the feet, well, I have Ehlers-Danlos so I have to be especially careful about everything. My daughter in law, a nurse in NYC, told me that all the nurses wear only Fit Flop shoes, clogs and sandals to keep balance, absorb wear from cement floors and for utter comfort. I tried them and I have never looked back! I won’t let any shoe, sandal , boot or slipper near my feet that aren’t Fit Flop brand. The wobble board in the center on every heel keeps me upright w great posture and the cushioning is so dense that I have NO pain after over 30 surgeries .!……so I just wanted to pass that along…..oh….a LOT cheaper on amazon!!
