Are riding lawn mowers safe for people with Osteoporosis?

Posted by trathfon62 @trathfon62, Mar 3, 2023

Hi,
I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis of the lumbar spine. My T-score is -3.1. We have about 10 acres to mow every Spring through Fall and I was wondering if the vibration from the mower is good or bad for Osteoporosis. My husband said he will do all the mowing but it’s a lot and I would like to help out. I can’t find any information on the subject. I’m extra careful when I’m mowing. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I think its fine .. if you get tired stop and rest.. I ran chain saw I was fine..mind over matter. Look you might hurt a little bit afterwards I don't think you're going to break a bone or fracture something but it beats sitting on the couch and that's what matters hope you feel better Debbie

Hi @trathfon62, I think it depends if it's a smooth ride or bumpy and jarring. Some people with osteoporosis have gotten spinal fractures from sneezing. Can you check with your treating physician or a physical therapist?
With respect to vibrations, some people use a high intensity vibration platform exerciser to improve bone density, although Margaret Martin, a physical therapist who specializes in osteoporosis has warned about the dangers of this. Both she and Sara Meeks endorse the low instensity vibration exercisers which were developed in conjunction with NASA.

Thanks!
I’m going to continue to mow in moderation. I feel like it’s good to get outside. As long as I do t overdo.

I’m still riding my horse. Lawnmower seems safer. Just rest, mow in spurts, don’t do all 10 acres all at once.

Vibration platform Marodyne has a low intensity- 30Hz. There are data that it can improve condition of people with osteoporosis. However, vibration with high frequency, and some jobs are associated with it can cause with time negative health consequences, for example syndrome Renau - the block of capillary blood flow. Interesting what is the vibration frequency of your lawnmower?
