Are you still feeling a burning mouth and tongue after a few months?

Posted by streetlite @streetlite, Mar 29, 2023

4 months after radiation and low dose chemo my mouth and tongue still burn and feels like a mouthfull of hot peppers whenever I try to eat. Soft foods (eggs) and soup broth are my primary diet. Still have the white coating on half my tongue and tongue still feels numb and swollen. Doc said it will all go away eventually. My 8 weeks of treatment took place at the number 1 hospital in Bangkok. It is 400k away from my village home so I can't just up and see the Doc on a whim. Pet scan after treatment shows no sign of recurring cancer but I really want a steak and pasta dinner. Can't find magic mouthwash here so rely on saly/baking soda solution to gargle. Any success stories out there?

It will eventually return to normal feeling. Too bad about the Magic Mouthwash, I went through a couple bottles of that stuff myself. I put it in a large syringe and shot it right down my throat (didn't want my mouth numb. I wanted my poor, raw, burned throat numb). Can't find a Dr. in the states to prescribe it and send to you?
Much luck!!!

Thank you for your reply and positive outlook about the pain going away. My throat is fine, just the tongue and roof of mouth. I appreciate you reaching out.

See if you can find a cough suppresant called: Chloroseptic. It has a numbing effect also. I've used it many times and it doesn't taste like toilet bowl cleaner. 😉

@streetlite, how are you doing? Has the burning subsided?

Yes and No. Sometimes I can put hot soup in my mouth and it's refreshing and sometimes I can put an ice cube in my mouth and it like eating fire.
Mouth gets very dry during sleep.
Constant spitting of phlegm (use a spittoon all day).
white stuff still appearing on tongue and roof of mouth.
On the plus side I do think everything has lessened as the weeks go by.

I found the baking soda/salt solution the most effective.
