Reducing Forteo dose to every other day to reduce side effects?

Posted by mspatart @mspatart, Apr 6, 2023

Has anyone suffering from daily Forteo injection side effects modified the dose to every other day or to stopping for 3 days and then starting again for one to 2 weeks? I cannot tolerate the massive wave of side effects that hit me after just 2 weeks and can't find any information on how modifying the dose would 1. Reduce side effects, 2. Alter the effectiveness of the drug.

The only study I found was done on rats and the results seemed insignificant in terms of effectiveness.
Thanks to ANYONE OUT THERE!!

Hi, I take Forteo every other day in an effort to minimize the side effect of nausea. I’ve been doing it since February. It doesn’t seem to be helping though. I’m also now getting symptoms of indigestion. I’m ready to stop the drug I’m miserable.

So sorry to hear that reducing the dose doesn’t seem to affect your adverse symptoms.

Because you have experience with every other day dosing or so, does your doctor allow you to continue to use the drug after the 28 day cut off?
I believe my doctor said that every other day may be just as effective at building bone as taking it every day.

Did your doctor tell you the same thing?

What does your doctor say about it?

I took Forteo at bedtime for 28 days and the side effects only worsened. I was consulting a pharmacist and my doctor. The pharmacist didn’t recommend me stopping at all. My doctor never contacted me once I started the medicine, but said I could quit anytime I wanted . The nightly sharp pains zapping my legs and my knee joints hurting most of the time during the 28 days caused me to stop period. I told my doctor and pharmacist and they never contacted me again. I thought possibly I should have taken the medicine each morning instead. Good luck!

Do you mind if I ask what your side effects were? I'm about to start it.

Let's confuse things even more. In Japan a weekly administration of a higher dosage of Forteo has been approved. 56 mcg is taken rather than the normal 140 mcg without loss of efficacy if I read the article correctly.

You can find even more articles by searching for teriparatide Japan weekly
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35398293/
A summary of the article.
"It has been found that extending the interval between teriparatide administrations enables bone formation without increasing bone resorption, and a formulation with a weekly dose of 56.5 μg has already been developed in Japan, having been available for use since 2011."

Studies done in Canada and Japan. In both countries change in taking are accepted. Don’t know if that we’ll help as I couldn’t get my “doctors” to agree to this so stopped Forteo because of serious side effects.

P.S. I had severe daily headaches, stiff neck affecting my breathing, muscle spasms. I was taking at night as suggested. No difference. I threw the rest out.

If you also have RA, suggest you check out Minodronate as interesting study on pub med

I’m confused.

You say: a higher dosage of Forteo has been approved. 56 mcg is taken rather than the normal 140 mcg

Is this correct?

Is this what you meant to say?
