This is not for me (myself) but for a friend and he will acquiesce to trying any therapy or support groups. He just pushes it under the table. I've always been told that the addict must "want" help but it is hard for me to not do anything.

I understand your wanting to help your friend, however, you are right. If your friend doesn't realize he has a problem and want help, nothing can change for him.
The only person we can change is the person we see in the mirror. So, until your friend recognizes his need and wants help, he will stay where he is.
You can certainly encourage him and perhaps when he is ready, he will allow you to assist him. Thanks for your friendship and your desire to help.
