If you would like to help someone with this addiction, I would suggest that you keep posting on this site and provide ideas that have helped you personally. It might strike a chord with someone else and be helpful to them as well.

Focusing on the cause of addiction, is probably the best. As @jonasd mentioned, ""…I have identified my monster and it is easier to fight it." For each person that "monster" will probably be different. For some it might be childhood abuse, or perhaps a family history of addiction. Whatever it is, insight-oriented therapy, combined with support groups (either in-person or online) are good ways to find the root cause of the addiction.

Have there been therapy/and or support groups that have been helpful to you?

This is not for me (myself) but for a friend and he will acquiesce to trying any therapy or support groups. He just pushes it under the table. I've always been told that the addict must "want" help but it is hard for me to not do anything.
