I think if you are going to use a LABA (long acting bronchodilator) you are not supposed to use it without a steroid because that can be dangerous. I could be wrong but that is what I was told by a pulmonary doctor years ago when I lived in Europe.

That is the common wisdom. However it bumps up against reality for some people - my asthma defies control without the inhaled steroid. Last year we (my pulmo & I) decided to try the combination. For me it has been a game changer, and I'm approaching 10 months with one single exacerbation and no lung infection, and only rare use of a rescue inhaler. We'll see how it progresses.
