Recurrent Breast cancer & bone metastasis: What questions to ask?

Posted by onnajd @onnajd, Mar 29, 2023

I will accompany my mom for the first time on her 8th chemo (out of 12 sessions). May you please advise what are the important and critical questions I should ask from his Oncologist? We don't know the chances of survival. The Oncologist has not discussed it to us. I was advised by my friend to check the Cost Benefit Ratio. I am too reluctant to ask this. Moreover too scared to know anything bad about my mom 😭.
Mom has a short temper and eating very less. What is the best food appetizing and healthy?

@onnajd I am so sorry this is happening to your family. I know this is pretty traumatizing. Risk vs. Benefit is a frank conversation and some patients don’t really want to know. I would think, if you let your mom guide the conversation and ask questions that come up you might be able to avoid that short temper.
I have a need to know everything, but my mother only wanted what the doctors offered and not one more thing. I am not sure she was really my mother. Lol.
I would say whatever food she likes and wants is the right food, but if there is a nurse that you can ask or even better a nutritional specialist, that would be great.
My cousin wanted banana milkshakes with peanut butter. Her mother just wanted strawberry milkshakes. My brother wanted candy, and cheese. Any calories are better than no calories, but if you can add a little protein that is even better.
How has your mom handled chemo so far? Is she having a lot of nausea?

@onnajd I found having conversations with the doc without my mom present made a difference. It gave me time to digest any information and ask any questions that I needed answers to. I sign a release form that allowed to call or email the doc. When I had questions. That might be something to consider...
For some reason my mom doesn't ask questions and is quick to settle for whatever she is told by the doctor. It's a tough spot to be in when dealing with your parents and their doctors. You want to preserve their dignity but at the same time you need to see the full picture. And that can be challenging...

I was recently diagnosed with recurrent breast cancer and bone metastasis. It's been tough dealing with the pain and uncertainty, but I'm grateful for my support system. Anyone have experience with this and can share advice? Trying to stay strong and positive through this journey.

Hello.. I am also stage four since 2022. Being given this diagnosis is devastating. My metastisis is in lymph nodes in hepatic area near the liver but not in it. I currently take Kisqali a cdk4/6 inhibitor and faslodex shots once a month. I will be on these drugs until they no longer work. My original breast cancer was in 2013, stage 2B. Then it returned last year.
I wanted to let you know that there are wonderful support groups on Facebook. Look up metastatic breast cancer in Facebook search engine and you will find several groups. You will find lots of support among these groups.
I know how scary this is. I hope you have an oncologist you are comfortable with. I have found lots of stories of women are living bing 10-25 years with metastatic breast cancer. Exercise helps a lot. I walk 1-2 miles a day. You can do this. I know it’s hard but you are not alone and there are now wonderful drugs to combat stage 4. I also have a great therapist I see once a week. Focus on what you can do and not what you can’t. Many hugs

I've been stage 4 since December 2020. I'm doing good. Greatly blessed!! I hurt almost every day and take oxycodone at night. It was so difficult when I was diagnosed. Now, I have good emotional days and then tough days. Be kind to yourself. None of us has an expiration date marked on us. We will live until we die. That may be years. My oncologist said that the goal is to die with cancer and not from cancer. That, for some reason made me feel better. Some people live 10 years or more with cancer.
