Esophageal cancer: What to expect

Posted by maureeng @maureeng, Mar 13, 2023

Hi everyone. I am new here. I just have a lot of questions and worries. My dad who is 81 who's the strongest healthiest man I know until now was diagnosed with esophageal cancer yesterday. It started out as phlegm lots of it. He's been in the hospital for 14 days. I do not know what stage his cancer is yet. He has a j tube. He is coming home tomorrow then we are going to an oncologist. I just wanted to talk to someone who's been there. I guess I really don't know a whole lot until he goes to the oncologist.

Hi Maureen
Hope your visit with oncologist helps. I also was diagnosed with esophageal cancer after I could not swallow food and was caughing up a lot of phelm. They did an endoscopy and found large cancerous tumor in my lower esophagus. They did not think I was a good candidate for surgury to remove section of esophagus at 78, so I have now had 28 rounds of radiation and chemo. I am feeling much better now and can eat normally. I'm waiting for next PET scan to see if all the cancer is gone.
